Provided Dickson starts today, I guess Kelly is already a lock for a Saturday call-up.
Bingo. I guess time will tell. There’s also a small chance they make it a bullpen game with Cleto getting the start.
I think he would be a good short term option as Garcia’s replacement. He has the stuff to pitch as this level and I’m exciting to see that power sinker.
I think that Mo already said he has talked to Vuch and Pop Warner to discuss who it was going to be and it will be Dickson or Kelly. If Dickson starts today we have our answer. It seemse they are leading towards Kelly. I hope he’s more of a prospect so it also lets the team see what we have in him against MLB hitting.
Kelly turns 24 tomorrow. How would that be for a b’day present!
Not sure where to post this, but figured here was as good as any. I just wanted to thank everyone for all the great coverage and tons of high quality posts. I know it has to take a ton of time, but it is very much appreciated. Thanks so much.
Rosenthal a polished pitcher against a tough Tulsa lineup. Should be interesting to see how fares.
I’m planning on going to it, so I’ll give my feedback after tonight’s game.
Looking forward to it!
Same here!
I watched him shut that lineup down late last month in Springfield… 7 shutout innings….If memory serves on the 19th of May…only to see the bullpen lose it 3-2.
Simply put, he blew ‘em away. 7 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 7 Ks. Very encouraging start for Rosey.
I believe Kurt Heyer is pitching for Arizona in about 15 minutes.
Who would of thought in the 2009 Draft that now Kelly, Adams, M.Carpenter have made their debuts before Shelby Miller, and Robert Stock. Still sleepers that will make impact in that draft Jackson, and Rosenthal.
Thanks to all for the up-dates..
As much as I am sure that they preferred Dickson he last pitched on the 2nd, no way could he have waited that long (10th).
It was good to see them make the right call. Sometimes a pitcher gets lucky by rotation.
i really would have preferred Dickson get the start. Sometimes a team needs to take some risk to find out what they’ve got. In the case of Kelly they have plenty of time for that. With Dickson it would be better to know sooner rather than later so we can move on if he isn’t up to the task.
Impossible, too many days in between starts, you are creating a bad situation which could lead to injury.
I would have preferred it as well also.
I actually think the “getting to know what they have” is the reason they are getting Kelly. I think they want to see if he has the repetiore to get MLB hitters out as a starter. Also want to see how the power sinker plays at this level.
No actually I think he was taken because of where he fell in the rotation because they had no other opition, but you can think what you wish!
I think some of the lack of success that some of the cardinals young pitchers have had in STL is because they were thrown into unfamiliar situations. How do you bring up a starter and throw him into the pen without messing up his rhythm and routine? PJ, Ott, Dickson these are starters and trained for that role, Lynn an exception and if they move him back I would be disapointed and it would show how they misuse pitchers. Someone might have caught on with Cleto.
This is not to challenge your opinion, but just giving mine.
Ok, it’s not like every other franchise doesn’t do the same thing with it’s marginal AAA pitching prospects. It’s just part of baseball. Players having to adjust to new roles based on injuries. Danny Haren and Adam Wainwright were thrown into unfamiliar roles too.
I don’t think it’s just a matter of the turn in the rotation. Dickson was on the 40 I believe and it would have been MUCH easier just to use a guy already on the 40. They have to do a 40 man roster move to have Kelly up. That tells me they wanted him up for a reason.
Too many pitching injuries in this organization for me to believe they pulled him up just to see his “stuff”.
It is and should be the turn of the rotation, for the safety of the pitcher whther he is marginal or not, it’s WRONG. Especially to the young guys.
I know of a coach who was not too happy with how Cleto was used last year. I am pleased to see someone actually is getting it. Look what has happened to Mc Clellan. He’s a mess because of last year.
You just can’t keep putting pitchers in situations they don’t belong. Do other teams do that?
Didn’t Waino just go in end of season in relief to get a feel for the game? Didn’t he just get done with TJ surgery?
So your equating Wainwright 2006 bullpen with his 2011 surgery? Again I ask what is your agenda because you obviously have one. You do realize that Wainwrights UCL was already parially torn in HS and it was just a matter of time before he needed surgery.
Your right they did Cleto wrong last year. A 22 year old should get the call from AA just to fill in on the BP. The organization thought it was needed because of injuries and the fact we needed someone called up ASAP. They learned there lesson and wanted him to get used to the BP so they have him in relief in AAA this year.
Regarding McClellan- Every year he goes into Spring stretched out to be a starter but he hadn’t started since about 5 years before. It wasn’t really surprising that he was going to hit an inning limit and then his arm was going to go dead. It was his choice for be stretched out and go into the rotation.
How do pitchers learn how to deal with multiple situations unless you put them in?
Preparation for starters is much different than for releivers, closers. You can’t keep moving them back and forth in different roles, maybe end of aeason when you bring up the young guys. I don’t agree with doing that this time of year releiver, starter, back to starter, or taking a starter out of his rotation. Hav eyou ever pitched? Seriously pitched?
What teams move their young starters to relief, then back to start this time of year? This is what they were doing with Dickson and Matheny said it was not fair he needed work. They did this to Ottavino, I believe caused part of his issues. Not all guys have rubber arms.
Why would giving my opinion about pitching role changes mean I have an agenda. No one can give an opinion that may not agree with yours?
Regarding pitching role changes. Who are having role changes? Dickson will be a Brad Thompson type long man if he ever makes it and sticks in the Bigs. I’m sure he’s happy that he was in the MLB out of the bullpen rather than sitting in Memphis. At least his pocket book is happier.
Who else are you talking about? Your acting like its some epidemic of switching guys around? The Cardinals kept Ottavino ENTIRELY too long. He wasn’t good enough. She showed promise when he came up in relief for us but once he had been converted to a reliever full time i.e. this Spring he wasn’t successful thus the reason he was released. That said he’s till pitching in relief now and doing well. That change got him to the Bigs.
Who else are you talking about?
It just seems you complain and moan and groan and I’m not sure why.
Right now the relievers are in relief in STL, Salas, Sanchez, Cleto and Freeman. And the person taking Garcia’s place is a starter. Kelly. All should be right in Pitch and Hits world so stop complaining.
If you go back to the beginning of our conversation I only mentioned that Dickson wasn’t taken because of where he fell into the rotation. Not because they wanted to see Kelly, they know what he can and can’t do.
I made a comment there are far too many injuries to the pitchers for them just to look at someones stuff, they can’t afford any more injuries. Would you agree?
Pulling a pitcher back and forth from starter to reliever back to starter then having him sit more off days can be cause of injury.
My intention is that I was glad someone thought about what may be good for the pitcher, not just for the team.
Have you ever pitched?
Yes from aged 5 to 18. I’m stating that I don’t think this move was purely because it was Kelly’s turn in the order. Dickson could have skipped this start thrown a BP and been ready for Sunday. The fact the Cardinals are going to have to make a 40 man move to get Kelly in shows they really wanted him over Dickson.
They often take the path of least resistance in call ups going strictly by the 40 man. That is why Cleto got the call last year out of AA. He was on the 40 so he got the call. The easy move would have been having Dickson pitch Sunday. They didn’t take the easy move which shows me they want Kelly and to see what he can do against Big League hitters.
So according to you he should have skipped tonight thrown pen instead and pitched on Sunday?
Great pitcher management!
Who has been pulled back and forth from starter to reliever multiple times? Your pressing so much on that point and I’m not sure I’m seeing the epidemic of it happening.
Cleto was switched to relief this year because they did understand that he wasn’t prepared for the pen last year and acknowledged that he was most likely going to be used this year in relief for STL.
Well, I don’t think it was just because of where Kelly fell in the rotation vs Dickson. I think the FO thought Kelly gave us the best chance to win…and the best option for multiple outings.
Dickson has been a workhorse in the Memphis rotation. I don’t think he was ever given a fair opportunity to show what he could do for the Cardinals in the majors. He’s only had one start in the majors. Sometimes it just isn’t fair. That said, I think the Cardinals FO decided that they wanted Kelly rather than Dickson.
Jaime has been struggling for nearly two weeks. If the Cards had wanted to insure a spot for Dickson, they’d have manipulated his rotation spot by now.
