Some good work from starting pitchers tonight including Memphis’ John Gast.
- Eugenio Velez was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.
- It was a pretty low key offensive night for Memphis who actually out hit the Isotopes 9-7 despite losing the game.
- John Gast had a strong outing striking out 8 in 6 innings of work. He allowed 6 hits and 2 runs walking just 1.
- Chuckie Fick finished the game with 2 scoreless innings striking out 2 and allowing just 1 hit.
- Kolten Wong was 0-for-4 with a walk.
- Oscar Taveras was 1-for-5 with a double.
- Audry Perez was 2-for-5.
- Xavier Scruggs was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Richard Castillo struck out 7 in 6 innings. He was tagged for 8 hits and 3 runs while walking 2.
- Eric Fornataro and Keith Butler both pitched scoreless innings. Butler picked up his 13th save striking out 1 and allowing 1 hit.
- Starlin Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Luis de la Cruz and Ronnie Gil both went 2-for-3.
- Ryan Sherriff pitched 6 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 walk for 2 runs. He struck out 6.
- Dean Kiekhefer, whose command has gone from good to crazy good, picked up his 6th save of the seasons striking out 1 and allowing a hit. In 30 innings this season, Kiekhefer has walked just 1 batter and struck out 26.
- Tyler Rahmatulla was 2-for-4 with a triple.
- Juan Castillo was 2-for-3.
- Luis Mateo was 2-for-4.
- Anthony Garcia was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Hector Hernandez had a very shaky outing walking 6 in 5.2 innings. He was responsible for 2 runs on 4 hits. Hernandez struck out 4.
- Danny Miranda picked up the win with 2.1 shutout innings. He struck out 3 and allowed 1 hit.

god to see Gast with some K’s and few walks. His ability to miss bats at AAA has had me worried.
god is good :)
I should have mentioned the same for Castillo at AA as well.
Agreed. Gast and Castillo have been (for me) fantastic surprises this year – probably Castillo more than Gast. Gast is showing he has more than just a great pick-off move.
Though I what I like is he is deceasing his walk rate and increasing his strikeout rate this season other than just being a groundball pitcher starting to polish up and refine his command.
Greg Garcia goes deep again
What to say? YEAH, BABY! I really find myself rooting for this kid.
If he can hit for more power and improve his power numbers this season he will move up the prospect ladder but just because of his OBP and his fielding skills at SS he is an underrated prospect.
Worth noting is DSL winner Luis Perdomo. Kid is 19 and as of last year 6’2 165 with a projectional body. The Cardinals are very excited about him. He throws high 80′s to 91 and has an outstanding curveball Last night he went 6 innings only giving up 1 hit, 1 unearned run, 1 walk and 11 k’s.
Any exciting sleeper prospects at DSL worth following?
Fernando Baez and Luis Perdomo. Both pitchers, don’t know much about the position players.
There’s also Jose Godoy, a lefty-hitting 17-yo catcher who was one of our big July 2 signings last year.
Baez is 20, while Perdomo is 19. Another pitcher, Juan Perez, is just 16; he doesn’t turn 17 until mid-July.
No idea how good any of these guys are, but in general, the younger the player relative to the guys he’s playing against, the more interesting the prospect.
Baez was just converted to pitcher this year. Do you have a profile or write up on Godoy? I hadn’t heard anything about him ever.
Anyone heard anything about international signing last season Andres Serrano heard he can throw his FB topping at 96 and 92-95 consistent. He throws a slider and a curve he is extremely raw but he has a good project-able body 6 foot-3 and a high ceiling.
It’s too bad a local high school team had replaced our hitters last night in Memphis. The AAA club is ravaged because of all the call ups. Only one hitter is OPSing above .750 and he’s not even above the .800 range. Gast deserved the win last night.
One interesting note FWIW, Mo was on with Ron Jacober this morning and said that no one from Springfield will be filling holes in Memphis. It isn’t because they can’t, it is because they want to keep the core together in Springfield – I’m guessing in the same fashion he did in QC last year. I guess we will see if he holds the line on that……
That really sucks. The Cardinals would be better served promoting Rosenthal this season IMHO. Next season, we will need contributions from starters who begin the year in Memphis. Having Rosenthal in Memphis this season puts him in a better position to contribute to the big club in 2013. That takes pressure off of Shelby and gives the team enhanced options at Memphis. It also might give Shelby a kick in the pants having Rosenthal in Memphis threatening to pass him.
Kiekhefer gets very little love on this forum but he may be the best lefthanded bullpen guy we’ve got. He’s been just short of sensational the past 2 years.
26 K’s and 1 BB in 30 innings is superb. So is a 1.48 ERA after a 1.26 ERA last year with accumulated 14 saves.
Agree, If I were to pick 2 LOOGY’s to be on the major club in 3 years and to come from the system I’d pick Kiekhefer and Lyons. Gast could be there but I think Lyons will be better against lefties.
Lyons has been straight up stingy against lefties. He’s holding them to a .195 batting average which has ballooned the last few starts.
Kolten Wong led off the Springfield game with a lead off HR. His 6th of the season. Good to see he is hitting for more power I like to see his ISO numbers go up.
Wow Tyler Rahmatulla went 6-6 today with 2 HR and 7 RBI. Improving his AVG to .327. Anyone have a scouting report on him? And his offensive numbers look good for a Palm Beach call up with Colin Walsh they need some offense in that lineup.
I really like his bat if he can stay at 2B but Mateo has got almost all the 2B time at QC with Walsh getting a little and Tyler not much at all.
I think Tyler played 3rd today.
