Jeremy Schaffer hit for a park and schedule adjusted wOBA of .441 and a 1.009 OPS. Additionally, with 41 walks and 32 strikeouts, it is obvious Schaffer has good plate discipline and knows how to get on base. He played catcher for his college career and is listed at first base, so will start his pro career there.
Nola.com:
For the past three days, Tulane senior Jeremy Schaffer has virtually been tied to his computer, following the Major League Baseball draft. He got a phone call during the 17th round from the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals telling him they were thinking of taking him with their 18th-round pick. After agreeing on loose contract terms, Schaffer waited for his name to be called.
He never heard it.
“My computer cut out right as their pick was happening,” Schaffer said via cellphone. “So after the last two days, I didn’t even hear it.”
Sportsnola.com:
On top of being a standout in the classroom, Schaffer was a mainstay behind the plate for the Olive and Blue over the past four seasons. In four years he started 217 games – eighth most in school history – and set career-highs in seven offensive categories during his senior season. Schaffer ranks eighth in career home runs (41) and RBI (194) in the Tulane charts, while ranking among the top-20 in Conference USA history on both lists. His 59 doubles are ninth all-time at Tulane and he stands among the top-25 on seven other major offensive scales.

Schaffer and #17 Perry have both signed already. I’m glad these guys will get a full short-season of ball.
The Cards may be redoing the Matt Adams shift, moving a non-nifty catcher to first.
With 4 years at a big time program like Tulane, Schaffer could hit well in the low minors.
I like his power 41 HR in his career at Tulane. He might be another Matt Adams will less power potential but more plate discipline.
I wish we would start some of these guys out with some OF time early in their careers instead of waiting until they get to AAA and seeing they are blocked at 1B. It would seem easier to switch from OF to 1B at that point rather than the other way around.
How many AAA Memphis players will become rule 5 draft players? Several Quad Cities, Palm Beach & Springfield players seem to give more “hope” for their teams. Watching college play super regionals and see players I would pay to see. Just enjoy running, bunting, good sliders, circle changes, fast balls and most of all, speed & defense. Sorry but more pitchers get injured pitching to six batters because of poor speed & no defense.
I was able to see him play and he can hit and he has a very good idea of the strike zone, could be a good pick.
