Palm Beach is off and will play their all start game tonight.  Memphis split a double header while Springfield sees the return of a top prospect from the disabled list.

Memphis 2, New Orleans 5 (7 innings)

  • Mark Hamilton was 2-for-3 with a double. With a .676 OPS on the season, you have to assume that this is Hamilton’s last year with the organization and he currently makes an easy candidate to be outrighted from the 40-man roster should the Cardinals need another spot.
  • Ryan Jackson was 0-for-1 but drew 2 walks on the night.
  • Tyler Lyons pitched a complete game and appears to be the victim of some unlucky hit distributions as his final line (sans runs) was quite good. He allowed 7 hits and walked no one but a 2-run homerun and a rough first inning allowed the Zephyrs to compile 5 runs. Lyons struck out 7 in his first AAA start.

Memphis 10, New Orleans 3 (7 innings)

  • Eugenio Velez was 3-for-4 with a home run.
  • Mark Hamilton was 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and a walk. (The .676 OPS mentioned above includes both games. Hamilton’s had a rough year.)
  • Zack Cox was 3-for-4 with a double.
  • Brian Broderick allowed 7 hits in 5 innings for 3 runs. He walked 1 and struck out 1.
  • Jess Todd pitched a 2-hit scoreless 7th. Todd is carrying around an ugly era right now (5.23) but he’s got a 3:1 K:BB rate and has developed into a slight groundball pitcher. (He used to be a heavy flyball pitcher so this change is unexpected.)

Springfield 5, NW Arkansas 2

  • Kolten Wong was 2-for-4.
  • Oscar Taveras was 2-for-3 with a walk. After his batting average dipped a touch below .300, Taveras has gone on a tear and now sports a .327/.380/.581 line. All the debates we had about Matt Adams hitting profile we can have about Taveras. The nice part about Taveras, however, is that he should be a plus defensively.
  • Xavier Scruggs was 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk.
  • Carlos Martinez in his first start back from the DL struck out 3 and walked 1 in 3 innings. He allowed 3 hits and 1 unearned run.
  • Kevin Thomas followed Martinez to provide additional innings and did an outstanding job with 3 perfect frames. He struck out 4.
  • Eric Fornataro pitched a 1-K 8th inning.
  • Keith Butler pitched a 2-K 9th inning.

Quad Cities 3, Wisconsin 2

  • Anthony Garcia hit a 2 run home run in the 4th. It was his only hit in 4 PAs.
  • David Medina went 2-for-4 and was substituted for Virgil Hill as a pinch runner in the 9th. The strategy would pay off and Hill would score a walk off run for the River Bandits.
  • It was a rather tepid hitting night for Quad Cities who had 5 hits and 4 walks in total.
  • Hector Hernandez struck out 6 in 6 innings allowing 6 hits. He walked 2 and was saddled with 2 runs (1 earned).

Martinez 3.0 IP 1 R 0 ER 1 BB 3 K. Pretty good line coming off his injury.

    • BigRob says:

Yes, very good to see. It was also reported that he was consistently in the upper 90′s with his fastball. Glad he is back.

      • DT Flush says:

Thanks for the news. Martinez was on a pitch count last night they didn’t won’t to over work him coming off an injury. 45 Pitches-27 for strikes.

Fornataro now in 39 1/3 IP this season still hasn’t given up a HR. He’s got a pretty impressive line transitioning to the pen this season 1.83 ERA 39.1 IP 10 BB 22 K 1.94 GO/AO ratio .201 opponents AVG .239 BABIP 72.5 LOB% 3.04 FIP and 14 Holds setting up Butler this season.

Xaiver Scruggs in the month of June .366/.460/.780 OPS 1.280 A HR every 8 AB’s. K/BB ratio 1/1

Kevin Thomas in his last 10 games.
17.1 IP 12H 1 HR allowed 1BB 19K’s. 7 of those 10 games were perfect outings ranging from 1 to 3 innings in length. GB rate for May = 65% GB rate for June = 75%.

Tweet by Rob Rains “No truth to Fri. rumor that Cards have deal with 12th rd pick Max Foody; won’t know if they can sign him until after all top 10 picks sign..”

  6. Lou Schuler says:

Quite a run for Lyons: injured in 2010, then 94 IP last year at PB + AFL (where he did okay, IIRC).

Now 64 IP at Springfield this year, nice debut at Memphis.

For his career so far: ~ 20% K and 7.5% BB rates, improved GB% in Springfield (55%, up from low 40s last year in Palm Beach).

Do we have another promising lefty here?

    • MRS. TLR says:

      Lyons is very promising. Underestimated

      • Karmaloop says:

Agreed. Our second best left handed pitching prospect behind John Gast. Might not be more than a back-of-the-rotation starter, but I think he’d be a hell of a LOOGY right now.
