A mixed night for the org as the top level team falls in a lopsided loss to the Royals affiliate.
Palm Beach’s game was postponed with a double header scheduled for today.
- Steven Hill and Pete Kozma both went 2-for-4.
- Bryan Anderson was 3-for-4 with a double. Anderson has been simply awful this year posting various career lows. It probably seals shut whatever crack their was for him to stick in the majors as a backup catcher. His season currently stands at .197/.280/.254.
- Brian Broderick was absolutely rocked for 10 runs (8 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks in just 3 innings.
- Nick Greenwood came in to stem the damage and protect the bullpen. He pitched 3 innings allowing 1 hit and striking out 1.
- Overall the Memphis Redbirds fared reasonably well against one of the Royals top pitching prospects in Jake Odorizzi. They managed 10 hits and 2 walks in his 6 innings but it wasn’t enough on a night when their own starting pitching collapsed.
- Kolten Wong was 1-for-4 with a walk. Maybe it’s the level jump, but it’s interesting to me that Wong’s numbers, especially his power, is down so significantly given the park and league that he’s playing in.
- Oscar Taveras only had one hit in his 5 trips to the plate but he did hit the ball out of the park for the 14th time this year.
- Chris Swauger was 3-for-4 with a walk, double and a home run.
- Jake Shaffer was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a walk.
- Seth Maness had a night where the balls weren’t finding gloves allowing 9 hits in 5.1 innings. He showed his characteristic control walking no one and striking out 3. Maness was responsible for 4 runs.
- Justin Wright takes the loss allowing 4 runs in 1.2 innings. He struck out 3 but the problem was the 2 long balls that he allowed.
Palm Beach: Postponed
- Colin Walsh was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Anthony Garcia was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
- Luis Mateo hit the ball out of the park for his 8th of the year providing an insurance run in the 9th inning.
- Sam Gaviglio had a ridiculous night. He threw 45 pitches of which 42 were strikes. He pitched 5 innings but struck out 9. He walked 0. He recorded 7 groundouts and 0 airouts. He delivered a child in between the 3rd and 4th inning. I made that last one up but Gaviglio’s night was better than his 5 hits and 3 earned runs suggest. Gaviglio has 49 strikeouts against 14 walks in 67 innings. The question will be whether the sinker holds up at higher levels given his relatively weak velocity.
- Heath Wyatt picked up his 10th save with 2 strikeouts in a perfect 9th. He has 29 strikeouts in 30 innings this year.
- Breyvic Valera (2B) was 2-for-5 with a double.
- David Washington (1B) was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Jordan Walton (LF) was 2-for-4.
- Ben O’Shea struck out 3 in 4 innings of work. He allowed 3 runs on 5 hits.
- 2012 draftee Kyle Barraclough, whose name will take me all season to learn how to spell by memory, took the loss with 3 runs (1 earned) allowed in 3 innings. He was tagged for 5 hits while striking out 2.
- C.J. McElroy (CF) was 3-for-5.
- Ildemaro Vargas (2B) was 3-for-5.
- Trevor Martin (DH) was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
- 2012 draftee Carson Kelly was 0-for-4 while playing 3B.
- 2012 draftee Steve Bean (C) was 1-for-5.
- Stalyn Lopez was effectively wild over 4 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit. He walked 4 and struck out 4.
- Ronald Shaban picked up his second save with a perfect 9th striking out the side.

Lots of interesting talent involved in JC’s 10-inning win. Ronard Castillo started the 9th-inning rally with a double, and scored the game-tying run.
Lance Jeffries started the game-winning rally in the 10th with a single. Castillo was hit by a pitch. Kelly moved them to 2nd and 3rd with an infield out. (He was credited with a sac bunt in the 9th, but not in the 10th, even though the result was the same both times.) Then Tony Bryant drove in both guys with a single.
Ildemaro Vargas is a name to watch. A switch hitting middle infielder out of Venezuela, he had more BBs than Ks last year in the GCL, although no power (133 wRC+).
He’s not switch hitting according to the JC announcer.
Re: Wong — his wRC+ is 129, 2nd highest among TL’s 2B. The others in the same range are considerably older than him. And a 129 wRC+ would presently be 2nd among all 2B in the majors. He’s still just 21.
Yep, absolutely no worries about wong…keep getting on base at a high clip with above average D an an occasional homerun, and I’m fine with that
Carson Kelly is still looking for his first big league hit, not worried though.
Most of these players are still looking for their first big league hit ;)
Kelly is going to have to wait a long time for his “first big league hit.” A minor-league one would be nice.
C.J. McElroy is off to a fast start 7-18 1 double 1 SB .389 AVG .467 BABIP though it’s a small sample size.
Seth Maness had a rare off night, but you gotta love the guy. Since moving into the Springfield rotation he’s also driven in 4 runs. That’s right; 4 rbi. I think he gets an rbi for every walk he gives up. Apparently he loves to hit. He can do it all.
DSL Cardinals have a starting pitcher Luis Perdomo who had pitched 3 games for 17 total innings and not given up a run yet. Actually they have had 4 starters who have been dynamite so far.
Perdomo is a guy to watch in DSL. Sits 90-92 on his FB decent curve and change. Raw pitcher though.
He gave up his first run of the season yesterday, but now he sits at 23 IP, 14 hits, 4 BB, 23 K.
SSS, etc., but that’s a very nice start to his second pro season. 19 years old, listed at 6’2″, 159 lbs. Looks like he has room to fill out, maybe gain a couple mph on his FB.
This site listed Shelby Miller as the probable starter for Memphis. Does anyone have any idea why he didn’t start?
They wanted to give him that round in the rotation off to let him clear his mind and work on fundamentals.
