The system went 3-and-2 on the night. Two of the farm’s top pitching prospects made highly anticipated starts tonight as Shelby Miller made his first start under the no-shake-rule and Tyrell Jenkins returned from the DL. Find out which of those two outings went well after the jump…

Hopefully this is something Shelby can build on.
Shelby was sating 92-95 topped 96-97 on his Fastball according to reports and had a sharp breaking ball as well. Miller also showed some maturity by pitching out of a base loaded jam with nobody out.
Bryan Martinez had only given up 1 hit going into the 5th inning.
Dewen Perez for DSL had a solid start 5 IP 5 H 1 R 1 ER 2 BB 6 K. In his 4 starts 19 IP he has only given up 2ER 3R 0.95 ERA 6 BB 24 K 1.29 GO/AO Ratio .200 opponents AVG.
ADD…………..He’s a lefty.
The Cardinals paid him 450k and Luhnow considered him one of the top arms in that years signings throughout MLB.
I read on BA that Dewen Perez’s mother is acting as the agent for of the higher-profile players in Latin America this year (I think in Venezuela).
So he’s a promising lefty and his mom’s an agent. That’s like a sixth tool, right?
Hopefully, old mom can push a couple of good prospects the Cards way, since I am sure she would want good players helping sonny boy’s team/career.
I love what we have in JC; as in Vargas, McIlroy, Lance Jeffries and especially the diamond in the (not so) rough Victor DeLeon. This guy could be very special. The next Trevor Rosenthal perhaps.
Off topic….I wonder who will be moved out of QC to make room for Piscotty and Ramsey?
I thought they already moved Rahmatulla to make room for Piscotty. I guess he hasn’t reported there yet. I would say maybe Anthony Garcia OPSing .888.
Palm Beach lost Swinson for 50 games. I think the QC roster has the spots available for Piscotty when his papers are processed.
Well Rahmatulla already was moved out of QC for Piscotty but the MLB is still processing the contract. What do they think hes Dominican or something?
Colin Walsh is an angry man. He keeps beating up little white balls that have done nothing ill mannered to him. Long tenure for Walsh in QC.
How long before they move Carson Kelly to the mound?
Kelly 2 for his last 27 AB small sample size of At Bats. Plus he’s only 17 years old facing 19-22 year old pitchers it will take him a while to adjusts to this level he’s very raw out of high school.
Carson Kelly is not getting moved to the mound. He is a hitter. He’s 17 years old and playing at Johnson City already. He’s a northern player, and they generally have a little extra development to make to catch up to their southern counterparts as well.
It shows the confidence level and the talent belief of the Cards decision makers to start him at JC.
For comparison’ sake, Bubba Starling the uber tools prospect for the Royals still hasn’t made his debut and he’s almost two years older. I know he has a minor hamstring tweak that has delayed him, but he started at extended last year and still hasn’t even made his league debut.
Kelly is fine…let the kid develop and not worry about the immediate results.
I know, I was joking.
BA on Miller’s start last night. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2012/06/short-siesta-pays-off-for-cardinals-shelby-miller/
Great to see Shelby take such a big step in the right direction. One would have to assume he threw far fewer fastballs than he had been, and had a tough time getting into the strike zone at times, but eight strikeouts and just one hit is proof positive that the quality of his stuff is still elite.
I liked Ryan Sherriff when the Cards drafted him, in that late-round-interesting-arm kind of way, and he’s still pretty intriguing. The low K rate has to be concerning, but between the grounders and a walk rate barely over 1.00, I’m liking what I see so far. Maybe he can succeed moving up the ladder as a Joel Pineiro v. 2009 style pitcher. Even with my optimism, though, I’m not sure if there’s a real long track record for pitchers who strikeout so few hitters in the low minors to end up making meaningful contributions.
That homerun by Garcia was a bomb to right center field…a no doubter..he is one exciting talent
How was defense in the OF? Also does he have a leg kick in his batting stance?
