Ryan Jackson had a perfect night at the plate for Memphis, notching a couple of extra base hits in the process. Springfield had a strong showing in the Texas League All-Star Game… one hitter in particular stole the show. Can you guess who? Sam Gaviglio pitched well for Quad Cities. After 17 innings, Batavia outlasted its opponent thanks to relief pitcher Corey Baker. Johnson City’s pitching staff had a forgettable day. Details after the jump…

Memphis 8, Albuquerque 10

  • Mark Hamilton, Pete Kozma, and Eugenio Velez all walked. Nick Derba drew 2 walks.
  • Cedric Hunter was 1-for-3 with a walk.

  • Ildemaro Vargas had a hit and walk.
  • Stalyn Lopez had a miserable day. 8 runs on 6 hits, 4 walks, and 1 strikeout in only 2.1 innings.
  • Jared Springer was only charged with 1 run but allowed 3 to score in the 3rd inning when he replaced Lopez. 2 of those runs scored on a bases-loaded walk and wild pitch. He walked 5, allowed 2 hits, and only struck out 1.

  1. DT Flush says:

Taveras was 3-4 with a HR, single, and a double was a triple away from the cycle pretty impressive in a All Star game.

  2. Karmaloop says:

Should also be noted that Stephen Piscotty made his debut today. 0-4 with a strikeout.

  3. DT Flush says:

Good to see Jackson continuing to hit now batting .291 and hit for surprising power tonight. Showing he can handle the bat in the pitcher friendly PCL impressive hope that translates to the big leagues.

Gorgen struggled locating his Fastball and getting ahead in the count tonight command was not that good threw 95 total only 49 for strikes not a good ratio.

  4. DT Flush says:

Good to see Gaviglio starting to command and control his pitches more effectively he hasn’t walked a batter in three starts he’s getting that control pitcher mentality back. Good to see him get back on track after struggling some in May he’s an interesting prospect. Walsh continues to get on base his OBP is now .426 and his OPS is still 1.013.

  5. DT Flush says:

In DSL. Issac Silva had a nice outing 7 IP 5 H 1R 1ER 0BB 5K 6 groundouts to 3 flyouts got a no decision. Note he’s a Lefty too. Anyone got an information on him?

  6. Colin's mom says:

    FREE COLIN WALSH

  7. jjray says:

Colin Walsh ISO .262. They better promote him before he gains super power status in the Midwest League and destroys everyone in three states.

    • mattybobo says:

He will destroy everything in THE TRI-STATE AREA.

      • jjray says:

Yes, I think many women, children, and tiny kittens of the midwest are in imminent danger of destruction. I’m not sure if Walsh will go puppy kicker on them though … but one should never underestimate the destructive power of a player given up for dead in the midwest league who is trying to regain prospect status.

  8. Ryan says:

As if it wasn’t obvious, The Big O was MVP of the game. And his homer was a hard liner that he absolutely smoked to right center

  9. Rich says:

Did DT just call the PCL a pitcher friendly league??? You have been severely misinformed on that. In fact, the PCL and the Cal league are hands down the best hitters leagues. Not to take anything away from Jackson at all, he’s had a great year. But that comment had to be addressed.

  10. wileyvet says:

Ryan Jackson’s impressive night also included 5 rbi, but oddly enough, only 1 on his homer. Jackson’s not going away any time soon. This guy is a gamer and should at least be backing up Furcal next year.

Kudos to Taveras, who owned the Texas League All-Star game. In fact all our boys showed well.

You won’t see this often, but our GCL Cards sweep a double-header by equal scores of 2-1 and in the process racked up only 6 hits in 13 innings. That’s maximizing production.

Someone please find Colin Walsh a position to play so he can move up. Surely we can teach him left field. His hitting abilities have long surpassed the Midwest League.

Sam Gaviglio, great game, now more of the same on a consistent basis.

  11. Andrew says:

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh………………………Thumbs up.

  12. Lou Schuler says:

    Interesting contrast of organizational philosophies:

In the JC game, the Royals played Kenneth Diekroeger, the infielder they just drafted from Stanford in the 4th round.

The Cards started our new Stanford draftee, Piscotty, in the Midwest League, 2 levels higher.

Their Stanford infielder had 3 hits (including 2 HRs), a walk, and 5 RBI, while our Stanford infielder went 0-4.

Yesterday’s JC game was also the debut for Bubba Starling, last year’s 5th overall pick. He went 0-5 w. 3 K. (For the Royals’ sake, I hope he doesn’t have many more games like that.)

  13. Uncle Randy says:

I don’t get the Jim Duggan gag.

    • Andrew says:

What do you mean gag? Minor Leagues have different promotions. I believe there is a TNA wrestling event after a Memphis game this week. The picture is from the Bandits pregame show they have every home game.

  14. Ryan says:

Nice write-up on Carlos Martinez from JD Sussman at Fangraphs:

    http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/32914/

    • Andrew says:

I watched the same game Sussman did and I disagree with him. Martinez only started to lose his mechanics some in the 4th and 5th inning and again that was in 100 degree heat when he hadn’t thrown that many pitches in over a month.

  15. PJ says:

How high can OT rise up prospect lists? I am betting he is sitting top 10 on nearly all of them right now.

    • VolsnCards5 says:

He’s sticking in CF…I think he will get props as top position prospect in all of baseball

      • Felonius_Monk says:

I would think if he hits the rest of the year like this (169 wRC+ at AA as a 19/20yo), and sticks in CF for the whole season, showing promise with the glove…. Jeez, it’s hard to think who’s going to be ahead of him, at least in terms of position players. Maybe Profar? 8 months younger, hitting well (but not quite as dominant as OT) in AA, and a SS who may stick there?

I think I’d probably swap OT for Profar right now, but if the lines are the same at the end of 2012, maybe not…

        • T-Bird says:

Profar will be the top position prospect. He plays a premium position and will stick there. Most view OT as a RF, not a CF. He will be downgraded for position. Machado might be listed ahead of him as well, based on ceiling. If Myers doesn’t lose eligibility, he should be the top position prospect. Regardless of rankings, OT is a stud.

      • RCHIII says:

Myers will get top billing position prospect, but it sounds like he may graduate this year. If so, OT could move into the top slot.

  16. Jim Hoffman says:

I 2nd Jackson off the bench in STL next year. We’ve seen it takes him a bit to get his footing as he moves up, but in the end he could be a guy that hits .270 and 5 to 10 HR’s per year while playing very good D. If Wong takes over at 2nd and Freese continues as he has we can live with a good defensive SS who hits not great but can hold his own

  17. DT Flush says:

Off topic… But does anyone having any scouting information on Barret Browning impressive numbers at Memphis this season as a LOOGY?

    • solar pons says:

As bad as the cards need an effective loogy hope BB is the guy..

      • wileyvet says:

Browning has been our top lefty in Memphis and I can’t for the life of me understand why they haven’t given him a shot yet. 40 man roster is not an issue either; there are a number of guys who could be optioned without being claimed. Right now both lefties in St.L have eras over 6.00. Surely Browning can do better then that and should be purchased asap. Dickson should be brought back up too.

  18. Bob says:

I wonder if Jackson’s solid Memphis season might make Tyler Greene into an add-on trade chip for someone.

Why did Taveras have to make an out in the All-Star game? Ruined my night.
