Some power arms starting tonight. I would like to see Martinez continue throw the ball well like he has in his past two starts. Jenkins like to see him be more consistent in his outing. He’s a very raw pitcher you will get inconsistent starts from young pitchers he will need plenty more development time though.
Ryan Sherriff has been getting no prospect attention. He’s got impressive numbers in the FCL. In six starts that’s 40IP 5-0 2.23 ERA has held opponents to a .176 AVG LH Batters are just hitting .159 against him possible LOOGY candidate. Averaging 4.46 K/9 only 1.12 BB/9 not much of a strikeout guy contact pitcher 48.4% Groundball Rate while maintaining a .197 BABIP. 40 Innings is not a small sample size.
He was picked pitcher of the month for June so that’s a start.
40 innings is a small sample size.
Additionally, I am not aware of any pitcher, ever, who has got to the Major Leagues and been successful, who has struck out less than 5 per 9 in A-ball.
Whilst it’s nice to point out some of the transient successes at these levels, a lot of these limited guys (e.g. Sherriff) just aren’t “prospects”. Suggesting they are makes the tag kind of meaningless.
Bob Tewksbury, 1982, Fort Lauderdale: 182.1 IP, 92 K.
And of course, the fact that one is reduced to looking to Bob Tewksbury as a refutation of your point probably does more to make your point than to refute it.
damn Grunt, now I feel bad for coming up with the same response. ;o)
Bob Tewksbury had a 4.54 K/9 in ’82… Still he completed 13 of 23 games that year and had 12 pretty decent years in the majors.

Thru 3.1 Carlos Martinez has 7 K’s…just issued his first walk.
No Taveras tonight so no offense…?
