The farm went 4-1 last night and the offenses provided some real highlights in the four wins.  Johnson City accounted for the one loss, they got shutout and their starter got knocked out of the game before the end of the first inning.  Many good performances to get to so let’s get to the good stuff…..

I love the placement and start of Brett Wiley at Q.C. Local college stud. Jefferson College has a superb reputation. Keep an eye on this young man.

Per D. Goold, Heyer has signed.

    • illinoiscardinalfan says:

The Cardinals have done very well on their signings–but I was looking at what the Cubs have done and they have signed 18 of their first 19 picks. Only their second round pick has not signed. The Cubs had two compensation picks and the Cubs went with a lot more high school high upside picks than the Cardinals.

I guess I was initially disappointed by this years draft because I would have liked to see the Cardinals go for a little more upside especially since they had so many picks. Then after reading more about the new rules I was kind of sold on the idea that the Cardinals drafted smartly because under the new system sign-ability was much more important, but when comparing what the Cubs did to what the Cardinals did I find myself wondering whether or not the Cardinals over emphasized sign-ability and sold themselves short on upside?

      • Anthony says:

One thing to keep in mind is that the Cards drafted a lot of high upside HS players last year and it has left a bit of a gap in the lower minors partly due to guys like Tavers, Wong & Rosenthal moving so quickly. As such, I think the organization was more interested in drafting a few safer fast moving picks that they could use to back fill as those guys continue to move up and the 2011 draftees take time to mature.

      • Joe says:

Bean, Kelly, Foody HS prospects… and along with: Cory Jones, Brett Wiley and Dixon Llorens from Juco ranks– I don’t see where they shorted themselves on upside compared to other clubs after the 1st round.

I think the only upside they missed out on was at 23 (of course), but they got there guy and if they’re right about him– AA has a CF prospect in 2013, which was desperately needed. Count me in on a huge fan of this draft after taken it all in…The more I learn about, Patrick Wisdom– the more I REALLY about him.

        • Andrew says:

Tommy Pham needs to be in CF at AA in 2013.

          • Joe says:

Tommy Phan’s “prospect time” has come and gone– he isn’t going to block Ramsey’s progression to St. Louis.

            • Andrew says:

Pham has more talent in his little finger than Ramsey has in his body. The only thing that has held him back have been freak injuries.

              • Hugecardsfan says:

When you have injuries which take you out of the game for significant periods of time 4 years in a row, they aren’t “freak”…. Tommy Pham is injury prone and there’s no reason to believe that somehow it will stop happening.

                • Andrew says:

Which injury of Pham’s wasn’t freak? His eye condition that he had to have surgery for? The broken wrist from robbing a homerun or the major shoulder issue from diving for a catch in the OF, not having it heal properly and then reinjuring it diving back into first base?

              • Joe says:

So much talent that nobody wanted him in the rule 5 draft. Phan isn’t blocking Ramsey’s development- sorry.

                • pitch and hit says:

I agree, you don’t get better sitting in rehab, you just watch others pass you by.
The shoulder not healing properly was not his fault, so I will give him teh benefit of the doubt and hoping that ht e gets another fair shot.

                • Andrew says:

He wasn’t available via rule 5 this year. I don’t think at least.

                  • cariocacardinal says:

                    yes he was

                    • Andrew says:

Someone on the 60day DL can be available via rule 5?

                    • Gruntosaurus says:

At the end of the season, someone who is on the 60-day DL must be removed from that list, and either restored to to the 40-man or outrighted (I think). The 60-man cannot be used as indefinite protection during the off season.

                    • cariocacardinal says:

Grunt is correct – there is no 60 day (or 15 day) DL during the off season. Add the fact that Pham wasn’t on the 60 day DL since that applies to guys who were on the 40 man roster which he was not. (If he was the Rule 5 draft wouldn’t apply to him!)

                    • Andrew says:

So tell me why WOULD any team pick him in the Rule 5 draft if they would to keep him on the 25 man roster for the whole year knowing that he was on the DL and was out fo rhte year? Fact is the guy is very talented and he shouldn’t be written off simply because he has had a horrible string of luck. Did Charlie Tilson lose his prospect status because he had a major shoulder injury? If not why would Pham.

                    • cariocacardinal says:

Andrew, you are not thinking clearly!

                      1. He wasn’t out all year. he was healthy to start the seaon.

                      2. They can draft him for the 25 man roster and then put him on the 60 day DL if not healthy. Wouldn’t affect there 25 man roster management at all for the time he was out. They still have to keep him on the 25 man roster once healthy (even if it is the next season) but that wouldn’t keep top player from being drafted.

                      3. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY He wasn’t drafted! The whole question here was whether he was eligible or not. He was. He wasn’t drafted. If teams didn’t draft him due to injury concerns that doesn’t change the answer to the question. In fact, I think he has been eligible 3 times already and not drafted.

As far as his prospect status and that relative to Tilson there is one major factor at play — Age/Career Pham is about 5 years older and on top of that I believe he is a minor league FA after this season if not put on the 40 man roster (that will be an interesting decision by the Cards); Tilson has 5 more years until that decision becomes necessary. That means one still has time to develop and for the other the time is now.

      • Indiana Cardinal says:

For what it is worth picks 8, 9 and 10 had cumulative slot bonuses of just under $400,000 for all teams (slight variances). The Flubs signed their #’s 8,9 and 10 for at total of $30,000, yes $10,000 each. The Cards spent about $140,000 for those picks. With all due respect to scouting ability, at some point you get what you pay for.

If fairness both teams have spent in excess of $300,000 above their total respective budgets, thus being in line to pay the money penalty without losing a draft choice. Both teams’ fans should be happy with the spending effort by both teams.

        • illinoiscardinalfan says:

Actually signing the 8,9, and 10th picks for 30,000 in order to have enough money to go over slot with their first three picks seems like a pretty smart idea.

As to the spending efforts, there is certainly something to be said for the amount of money spent but how it was spent is important too. The Ramsey signing certainly generated its share of controversy here.

          • zuke354 says:

            Just like the wong signing.

Problem is, people on this board have no problems criticizing the cards drafts…but yet can’t accept the fact when they are wrong.

  3. rj says:

Batavia has become an interesting team to follow with an infield of Valera, Wisdom, and Mejia and several college pitchers from the 2012 draft doing well. Stoppelman has not allowed an earned run. What a great name for a closer. Also, the GCl Cards are now 15-4 and seemingly without any real elite prospects.

    • RCHIII says:

I am glad you brought up Lee Stoppelman. Great kid from Pleasant Hill, MO and University of Central Missouri. I don’t know if he has enough to get to the Bigs, but he looks like he needs to move up – especially given he just turned 22. He is a Lefty that can throw strikes with a nice curve. 10.2 IP, 5H, 2 BB, 13 SO, .132 BAA. Definitely a kid to root for.

    • Uncle Randy says:

Kelly has been stinging the ball the last week or so. May or may not have prospect crush on this child.

  4. Cj says:

i think the cardinals just have a unique draft system and they take who they like best even if it makes no sense to everyone else in the baseball world.

  5. DT Flush says:

Heard reports last night that converted position player Samuel Tuivailala was sitting 96-98 on his fastball. Heard gun may have been a little fast too.

  6. shaneo69 says:

Not often that you score 13 runs with your leadoff hitter going 0 for 6…

  7. Felonius_Monk says:

(Very early) quick look at the newly drafted hitters:

James Ramsey, with his rather aggressive assignment to high-A Palm Beach, perhaps unsurprisingly struggling to start with: 82 wRC+ (i.e. about 20% below-average for the league) in 6 games, with only 1 walk.

Stephen Piscotty, who ended up a rung below Ramsey (perhaps due to 3B logjam?) is raking in A-ball (QC): 183 wRC+, a near 1:1 K:BB ratio, and an impressive .250 ISO. Can see him in Palm Beach by the end of the year.

Patrick Wisdom, as a college draftee and 1st rounder, really should be raking in Batavia (short season A-ball); luckily he is: 154 wRC+ with pretty solid peripherals, though not as much pop as Piscotty, 13 games in. I’m guessing he’ll be up in QC as soon as Piscotty makes it to Palm Beach.

Steve Bean (66 wRC+) and Carson Kelly (33 wRC+) are struggling badly in rookie ball, but at least both (especially 17-yo Kelly) have plenty of time.
