Daily Farm Report – 7/10/12 + ASG 2012 Thread
Posted on July 11th, 2012 by t7rick in Daily Farm ReportsSpringfield was the only team in the minors scheduled to play last night, but their game was suspended in the top of the 5th with Springfield ahead of Midland, 1-0. To this point, Jake Shaffer is 2-2 w/ solo homer and Scott McGregor has pitched superbly w/ 4.0 shutout innings. The game update will be posted in the appropriate DFR.
In other baseball news, the National League put a hurting on the American League by a score of 8-0. David Freese struck out in his only AB, Rafael Furcal tripled and was driven home by his real life teammate Matt Holliday. Just for fun, if you watched the game, what player were you most impressed by? My vote goes to Craig Kimbrel who looked absolutely unhittable. Throwing 100mph gas and then backing that up with a hard, tight slider. Wow. What say you FR Nation?

Andrew McCutchen impressed me. The way he turned on that fastball and how quickly he got the barrel through the zone. He’s all that and a bag of chips.
I would trade anyone in our system not name Oscar for him
If we could get McCutchen, I think OT becomes far less untouchable
I love Oscar, but if you could get McCutchen for him plus someone else in the back end of the Cardinals’ top 10 prospects, you pull the trigger all day every day. Cutch is proven, he is a top 5 player in baseball IMHO, and he has a very agreeable contract. Add to the argument that he is a good defensive CF’er and we don’t know/don’t believe that OT could stay in CF and you have to make that trade.
Obviously this would never happen as the Pirates are contending and wouldn’t trade Cutch even if they weren’t. Good fantasy trade though.
Speaking of trades, one of the big national guys reported that the Padres were scouting Memphis in anticipation of a potential Huston Street trade. Thoughts on that/who do you think they (the Padres) will target/who would you give up for Huston Street?
If I’m SD, I push hard for a deal around Rosenthal. If I’m St. Louis I try to push Adams on them. I like Matt, but he’s roadblocked at 1B by Craig, and by the time he’s 30 I shutter to think what his body will look like. Cox won’t tempt them because they have Headley at 3B.
Trading either of those guys for a rental of Huston Street would be a disaster. I wouldn’t doubt if the deal was just for a backend starter to give their rotation innings to get through the season and a lottery ticket.
Yeah I agree. Any of those three would be outlandish, particularly given that Street has no draft picks coming with him.
I also agree that Adams is a bona fide trade chip, as Craig is the future at first and Adams has pretty substantial value right now. I’d trade Adams for a reliever who’s not about to be a free agent like Gregerson or David Hernandez.
I wouldn’t sell so cheap on Adams; he’s worth a lot more than either one of those guys, although I would love to have Gregerson back.
Check out Street’s career stats and I think you will hang on to Rosenthal and Adams. We got Furcal last year for a lot less than that . I think he is a decent reliever but not worth a top prospect.
If I’m the Cards, I try to push Cox on the Padres, who may well trade Chase Headley and need a 3B. Cox’s struggles until recently may require a bullpen throwin. How about Salas?
There is no prospect in the Cardinals’ top 20, and probably top 30, that I would remotely consider giving up for Huston Street. What a crazy idea.
You’re probably right. I just think we haven’t seen all there is to OT long term. I think he could be as valuable as McCutchen between in 3 years and we would have him on the cheap.
I like Hammer Hands Splitter. Motte should learn to throw one of those.
Gas, Gas, Spitter, out…
Kimbrel for sure, he is the epitome of filthy. Plus, he’s flipping’ 24!
Two observations after watching the futures game. Wong is smaller than I thought, looked even smaller than Altuve and Tavares is larger than I thought. He has potential to be a certified power hitter in the majors a lot more than McCutchen can ever hope for. I would not trade him for McCutchen. Tavares looks pretty much sure fire to me.
Uhhh what? you would not trade the a guy in AA for one of the best players in the NL (who is locked up until 2019)?
Taverez AA stats (hitters league/park): 20 – .324/.372/.593 6 SB – probably end up LF/RF
McCutchern Major league stats (pitcher park AND MAJOR LEAGUES): 25 – .362/.414/.625 14SB- and plays a good CF.
ridge,
McCutchen Has 18HRs and batting .360 in the majors not AA Would trade Jay,Miller and OT for him anyday.
And the bigger kicker…locked up.
I like your loyalty to OT ridge, but it would take me less than a second to hit “accept” if the Pirates offered me McCutchen for OT.
I’m not trading Oscar for anyone. Yeah McCutchen would be awesome to have but I just couldn’t trade OT. One thing to remember is that OT is six years younger. I also wouldn’t trade Adams for Street. Adams is young, has a bright future and IMO he isn’t blocked by Craig. Craig can move around from 1B to RF while OT plays CF and LF while Holliday gets a day off. But like I said earlier, I’m keeping OT no matter what.
My guess is there looking at ryan jackson, possibly eduardo sanchez in memphis. Some of the other players mentioned aren’t worth giving up for a huston street rental (adams, rosenthal, cox).
Anyone who wouldn’t trade Taveras for McCutchen is living in prospect la-la-land. Seriously, that’s one of the most asinine suggestions I’ve read all day. McCutchen is cheap, at his peak, signed long-term, and likely a better player right now than Taveras will ever be. In any case, the Pirates aren’t trading him for any price.
FWIW I also think that if we want Street (I, personally, don’t – I’d look for a lefty reliever or starter before I started targetting over-rated closers) the price would be in the region of Matt Adams, or Zack Cox. I wouldn’t do that, personally, but I think trying to fork them over Tyler Lyons, Ryan Jackson or Sam Gaviglio or whatever likely isn’t getting it done.
I think you may be over estimating Huston Street’s value as an injury prone rental. San Diego has top prospects major league ready at 3rd and 1st (Gyorko, and Grandal) so scouting Cox and Adams at Memphis for this trade doesn’t make sense. That’s why I believe players like Jackson, Sanchez, Lyons or Gast could be what they are looking at. Jacksin makes the most sense to me because his solid d plays would play welll with how that team is building to play in that park.
And people wonder why Joe Strauss makes fun of the prospect community.
Ouch, I undrestand. Went a little crazy there with my geekiness. First time poster though so cut me a little slack. Besides judging by your name we might be fraternity brothers. Were you possibly a Theta Xi at SEMO?
Wow I need to spell check before I submit
