For the second time in as many years (Maikel Cleto last year) the Cardinals promote a pitcher from AA Springfield right to the major league bullpen. Per BJ Rains of Fox Sports Midwest and Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are promoting Trevor Rosenthal to pitch in the bullpen.
Rosenthal is not on the 40 man roster, so a corresponding move will need to be made there. Maikel Cleto (coincidentally enough) is headed down to Memphis to make room for Rosenthal on the 25 man roster.
Additionally, keep in mind that if the Cardinals promote Brian Fuentes, they will have to make another spot on the 40 man roster as well.
Some suggestions for players to release from the 40 man roster and subject to waivers are: RHP Chuckie Fick, 1B Mark Hamilton, SS Pete Kozma or C Steve Hill.
UPDATE: Per Derrick Goold, Jaime Garcia has been moved to the 60-day DL, which opens a spot on the 40 man roster.
Discuss.

Rosenthal made a huge jump in two seasons. In 2011 he was at Quad Cities under the radar, Then after ST in 2012 the organization was being aggressive with his development having him skip High A to pitch at Double A that move looks like it has paid off quite well. Now he’s gotten promoted to the Majors. Quite a jump for a 21st round draft pick in 2009 he’s been quite a sleeper in that draft.
Per Brian Walton. “#stlcards place LHP Jaime Garcia on the 60-day DL to make 40-man roster space for Trevor Rosenthal.
I was not surprised to see a double a pitcher get called up. I just figured it would have been Martinez. I think he will be the next name called up if Sanchez and salas don’t get it together. Hopefully they all put it together by the post season. Imagine salas, followed by Sanchez, Martinez, Boggs, Rosenthal, and Mote. Some serious heat and stuff from that group and all brought up through the farm. It is so nice to not see guys like Yan in our bull pen any more.
Man, I try to block that 2003 bullpen from my memory. Thinking about Yan and Pedro Borbon Jr. still makes me shudder.
2009 draft has now produced big-leaguers from the 13th round pick (M Carp), 19th rounder (Rosenthal), and 23rd rounder (Adams). The 18th rounder (Anthony Garcia) could join them some day.
Sucks to be Shelby…
First Kelly and now Rosenthal get the call before him…
Not sure why it sucks. Kelly is much older.
And I wonder if they are using this as a test for rosenthal while controlling the innings he works.
What Miller get’s for riding on his fastball 85% of the time and not developing his secondary pitches.
I would have liked to see Rosenthal pitch in AAA first but if there was any thought within the organization of trading away a top pitching prospect to acquire veteran pitching help and promoting Rosenthal helps to squelch that thought then I’m all for the move. It’s probably the lesser evil of several options. Lance Lynn 2.0? I hope so. Rosenthal is going be throwing some toxic gas out of the pen.
I’m hoping for the Lynn 2.0 option. In the meantime, Rosie is potentially Motte with more than 1 1/2 pitches – I mean he can really bring it when he isn’t trying to get through the 7th inning. I thought given the situation, that Rosie had as good a shot as any at the rotation in 2013. This is a really tough read, but if the Club was indeed thinking that as well, then spending the rest of 2012 in the bullpen could be the trial run to see if he can handle the crowd noise.
Rosenthal’s fastball has a lot more movement than Motte’s straight fastball. Also Rosenthal has a 5 pitch repertoire (4 seamer, hard sinker, slider, curve-ball, and a change-up) and Motte has a two pitch repertoire (4 Seamer, and a cutter). How are these two similar?
When Rosie flashes old “99″, I doubt it moves much. And who said they were similar? I meant to say the same thing you did when I said he is potentially Motte with MORE than 1 1/2 pitches. I only give Motte 1/2 credit for his cutter because he doesn’t use it enough, and the comparision to Motte was in terms of velocity. We are on the same page.
Now.
Were before too – you just didn’t know it.
I did say back in early spring that with his velocity he would end up first in ML by coming out of the pen, which it should be. I am not sure if you remember that.
I said it because I understand how hard it is to have 100% command when you throw that hard, especially when you are young and still learning. Wjile others argued his walk rate was too high, that means nothing when you pitch at the velo.
I think the andrew argued that point.
Congratualtions to TR, it’s so good to see the youngsters getting a chance to get up earlier (then they used to) and learn, instead of wilting away down on the farm.
The Cardinals probably feel like Rosenthal is the most polished product out of him, Miller, and Martinez. If they were to bring either of the other two up to the bullpen then they wouldnt get the neccessary time to continue to develop.
I tend to think you are correct.
Now officially start the clock for Rosenthal on the super two status.
Too late in the season for Rosenthal to be super-2, isn’t it?
Earliest he’ll be arb-elgibile is 2015.
That’s what I thought. I think the cut-off used to be June 10th. It may be later now, but I don’t think it is this late.
Here are the moves besides Rosenthal affecting Springfield.
Gorgen to Springfield
Ferrara to Springfield
Simpson released
Jose Garcia to Springfield
Shaffer Retired
That’s a lot of movement. It looks to me like if Rosenthal gets sent back down, it will be to Memphis….
I stop paying attention to my Minor League sites for a day and my favorite non Taveras prospect is promoted to STL. WOW.
Lesson learned eh?
One thing that could have (or not) played in to the reason Rosenthal (and Kelly) were promoted ahead of Shelby is that they have to be on the 40 man roster at the eand of the year or be subject to the Rule 5 draft. Because of Shelby’s age at signing, he has one more year before he has to be protected.
True. However, in this case, I think they made the moves they did because they believed Kelly and Rosenthal were ready while Miller isn’t. I am confident that if Miller was having a great season, this would not have happened. Miller may still end up the better pitcher, I don’t think anyone will discount that possibility, but I smelled this coming (not getting to MLB this early, but hopping Miller) from Spring Training. Rosenthal was always higher on the internal evaluations than most realized. I thought Rosie could get a September call up, but I didn’t think he would get it if they left him in Springfield all year. So when Mo said Rosenthal would not be promoted to Memphis a while back, I figured the odds were long. Rosenthal said he wanted to skip Memphis, I guess he wasn’t smoking wacky weed after all.
Low A to AA to MLB. That’s some serious tic-tac-toe.
While Miller may or may not be the better pitcher in the end, it does take a very mature player to get to MLB (from HS) so quickly and from my knowledge, Shelby wasn’t the most mature individual in that regard. He is not of the talent calibur (at this time in my opinion) of players like Kershaw, Trout, Porcello, Bumgartner who moved up pretty quickly.
Also keep in mind that Rosenthal and Kelly had college experience as well as more mature.
Rosie wasn’t that mature after he got drafted after one year in juco – probably the reason he was drafted so low instead of the top 10 rounds where he should have been drafted. However, he matured during his first full year of pro ball in EST and at JC. Everyone matures at different times. Shelby will get there.
