Rosie wasn’t that mature after he got drafted after one year in juco – probably the reason he was drafted so low instead of the top 10 rounds where he should have been drafted. However, he matured during his first full year of pro ball in EST and at JC. Everyone matures at different times. Shelby will get there.

While Miller may or may not be the better pitcher in the end, it does take a very mature player to get to MLB (from HS) so quickly and from my knowledge, Shelby wasn’t the most mature individual in that regard. He is not of the talent calibur (at this time in my opinion) of players like Kershaw, Trout, Porcello, Bumgartner who moved up pretty quickly.

Also keep in mind that Rosenthal and Kelly had college experience as well as more mature.

I did say back in early spring that with his velocity he would end up first in ML by coming out of the pen, which it should be. I am not sure if you remember that.
I said it because I understand how hard it is to have 100% command when you throw that hard, especially when you are young and still learning. Wjile others argued his walk rate was too high, that means nothing when you pitch at the velo.
I think the andrew argued that point.
Congratualtions to TR, it’s so good to see the youngsters getting a chance to get up earlier (then they used to) and learn, instead of wilting away down on the farm.

Man, I try to block that 2003 bullpen from my memory. Thinking about Yan and Pedro Borbon Jr. still makes me shudder.

True. However, in this case, I think they made the moves they did because they believed Kelly and Rosenthal were ready while Miller isn’t. I am confident that if Miller was having a great season, this would not have happened. Miller may still end up the better pitcher, I don’t think anyone will discount that possibility, but I smelled this coming (not getting to MLB this early, but hopping Miller) from Spring Training. Rosenthal was always higher on the internal evaluations than most realized. I thought Rosie could get a September call up, but I didn’t think he would get it if they left him in Springfield all year. So when Mo said Rosenthal would not be promoted to Memphis a while back, I figured the odds were long. Rosenthal said he wanted to skip Memphis, I guess he wasn’t smoking wacky weed after all.

One thing that could have (or not) played in to the reason Rosenthal (and Kelly) were promoted ahead of Shelby is that they have to be on the 40 man roster at the eand of the year or be subject to the Rule 5 draft. Because of Shelby’s age at signing, he has one more year before he has to be protected.
