Seth Maness continues to impress in AA Springfield. A pair of big hitters led the way for Memphis — one you’ll expect the other was a surprise. It was a rough night in the low minors with some particularly bad outings in Johnson City.
- Ryan Jackson was 2-for-5 with a home run. That’s two nights in a row with a long ball and three home runs in his last four games. He has eight on the season.
- Matt Adams was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
- Mark Hamilton was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- Pete Kozma was 2-for-4 with a triple.
- Zack Cox was 0-for-3.
- Nick Additon struck out 5 in 3.2 innings. He kept OKC off the board despite allowing 3 walks and 4 hits.
- Sam Freeman pitched a scoreless frame striking out 1. Since returning to the minors, Freeman has pitched 10.1 innings striking out 8 and walking 3.
- Kolten Wong was 1-for-5 with a double.
- Oscar Taveras was 0-for-4.
- Jermaine Curtis was 2-for-3.
- Audry Perez was 2-for-4 with a home run.
- Seth Maness was the story for Springfield yet again. He pitched 7 innings and struck out 6. NW Arkansas tallied 1 run on him with 6 hits.
- Eric Fornataro pitched a scoreless inning.
- Jorge Rondon finished off the game for his 4th save with a perfect frame striking out 2.
Palm Beach 3, Brevard County 4
- Alan Ahmady was 1-for-4 with a home run.
- Geoffrey Klein and Rainel Rosario both went 2-for-4. Rosario was something of a fringe prospect after his 2010 season in the Quad Cities. Things went south in Palm Beach during 2011 but his 2012 campaign has been a wreck including a demotion from Springfield.
- Scott Schneider allowed 8 hits in 5 innings of work. He struck out 1 and walked 1 and was responsible for all 4 runs. Schneider had been working in relief earlier in the season but the Cardinals shifted him back to the rotation with mixed results through 4 starts.
Quad Cities 7, Fort Wayne 8 (10 innings)
- Nick Martini was 2-for-5.
- Anthony Garcia was 0-for-3 with a pair of walks.
- David Medina and Jeremy Patton both went 2-for-5 with a double.
- Dail Villanueva was pulled with two outs in the second inning after allowing 5 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks.
- Kyle Barraclough was able to get better results but was just as shaky on the mound. He pitched 3.1 innings allowing 4 walks. Barraclough struck out 3 wand allowed 1 hit.
- Danny Miranda struck out the side while walking 1 in a scoreless 8th inning.
- Breyvic Valera (2B) was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Patrick Wisdom (3B) was 2-for-4.
- Garrett Wittels (LF) was 2-for-3 with a triple.
- Matthew Young (CF) was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Joe Cuda pitched 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 3.
- Yunier Castillo struck out 4 in 2 innings of work allowing 1 unearned run and 2 hits. Castillo has 21 strikeouts in 17 innings and just 3 walks.
Johnson City 1, Elizabethton 10
- JC tallied just 3 hits in the game and 2 walks.
- The pitching staff, led by starter Stalyn Lopez, struggled mightily. They walked 8 batters and allowed 9 hits including 2 home runs. An ugly game for Johnson City.
Johnson City 2, Elizabethton 4 (Game 2: 7 innings)
- Ildemaro Vargas (2B) was 2-for-4.
- Jeremy Schaffer (1B) was 2-for-4.
- Bruce Caldwell (SS) was 1-for-2 with a home run and a walk.
- Silfredo Garcia struck out an impressive 8 batters in 5.1 innings of work. He allowed 6 hits and 4 runs (3 earned).
- Michael Aldrete recorded the final two outs for Johnson City.

James Ramsey stole his 8th base in his 18th game. He’s yet to be caught stealing.
No walks (again) for Seth Maness. He now has 7 walks in 123 innings this season.
I also take note when Carson Kelly gets a walk. He received his 3rd of the season. 100 hundred at bats under his belt.
Zack Cox: Hitting .205 in his last 10 games. 3 dingers though.
Matt Adams now hitting .361 with an OPS of 1.076.
Maness now has 81K’s vs 7BB’s 123 inning sample. That’s an 8.67 plus K/BB ratio. He’s given up fewer hits than innings pitch this season he owns a 1.03 WHIP. Pretty solid control pitcher prospect.
That’s actually an even more impressive 11.57 k/bb for Maness. The 8.67k/bb is his Springfield ratio.
After watching Johnson city this weekend one name stands out, Ildemaro Vargas. I really liked his simple quick swing from the left side (never saw him take a swing from the right side) and his strike zone judgement was well ahead of his peers. While not challenged in the field he made all of the plays and certainly passes the eye test for his defense at second. A high energy athlete worth keeping a close eye on.
Oh and Kelly’s home run on Friday was over the twenty feet tall wall at the 400′ sign in dead center. It was very impressive. His plate discipline, not so much.
did you see Silfredo Garcia yesterday? Any info? His numbers are nothing short of outstanding. would love a scouting report on this guy.
High 80′s, low 90′s with a change up that produced a lot of swinging strikes. Looked shorter than the listed 6’2″. I’m always skeptical of polished pitchers with developed breaking stuff at lower levels and Garcia is a great example of someone who is farther ahead of the development curve than his peers.
Thanks. agree, but that level of control is impressive no matter what level and what your stuff is.
Describe the type of delivery he uses? Also does he depend on deception or control of his high 80s to low 90s fastball?
Between the walks and the stolen bases, Ramsey is looking more and more like a future leadoff candidate.
One of the more polished bats coming out of the college ranks Ramsey should be drawing lot’s of walks getting on base at a high rate. Another solid prospect. I also think his speed could be a plus tool down the road.
Maness was sharp last night. Better than he was his last start on Sunday. His pitches were moving a little more. He pitched against the same team in both games.
Maness went to 3 balls on only one batter. The last one he faced.
Rondon did hit the first batter he faced then settled down.
At least 10 scouts were at the game last night, but that is normal this time of year.
All 6 hits Maness gave up were singles as well, only 2 runners even reached 2nd base.
compared to browning?
start or relieve long term?
In a Post-Dispatch article this am, they talked of there being at least 25 pitchers in the system that could throw in the 90s consistantly in the Cards minors. I came up with the ones I knew for sure and I had 19. Can someone help with the other six?
My list:
Miller, Kelly, Gast, Reifer, Cleto, Sanchez, Freeman, Rosenthal, Fornataro, Martinez, Hooker, Siegrist, Jenkins, Stock, Tuivailala, Foody, Wacha, Swagerty and Blair.
Victor De Leon’s fastball sits low-to-mid 90s range.
Luis Perdomo and Dewen Perez of DSL have both been clocked sitting in the low 90s not sure about consistently though.
I never thought about the DSL. Thanks!
zachary petrick throws in the low 90s
not sure all of those on your list qualify but i’d add Rondon and Gorgen for sure. Pretty sure Yunier Castillo, Benes, Almarante, Jacob, and DeLeon are all there. Dickson? Cooney? Paulino? Keikhefer? Richard Castillo?
Tyler Lyons sits 88-92 consistently.
Gorgen is not a velocity guy. Jacob is slower than a years ago. Benes is not a velocity guy. Keikhefer is a junker. Siegrist and Foody are not Chapman.
In response to someone’s comment on Friday (I think), the reason you cannot find Anthony Garcia’s cards for sale is because he doesn’t have a bowman chrome card. Maybe if Azru would allow, I’d be interested in writing a detailed article about Cardinal minor leaguers and their card availablity. I guess the real question would be whether anyone on here is interested in that sort of thing.
Finally I’d like to say after reading this site religiously for a few years, and even checking when the opportunity presented itself during deployments, I cannot stress enough how grateful I am for the dedicated work of the ones who make this site work.
Hopefully I’ll start commenting more, I think this is the second one I’ve made since following the site!

Just read the P-D article; Sam Tui has hit 97 in each of his first two appearances? That’s crazy — especially since his rep coming out of school was 92-94.
How hard will he be throwing in 2 or 3 more years?
And Wacha touching 95? I thought he topped out at 93, basically. Pretty encouraging.
Pitchers who are tabbed as throwing a certain range can throw harder than that, just not with frequency or control. If Wacha’s fastball usually tops out at 93, it’s not surprising that he can hit 95 once in a while.
If Ramsey has plus speed on the base paths, shouldn’t his SBs weigh at least a little on the “can stick in centerfield” side of the balance?
If Jon Jay can “stick” in CF, I don’t know why Ramsey can’t.
Aaron Luna has started his rehab assignment in the GCL, in case it hasn’t been mentioned before.
Wow! Memphis has put up 14 runs through 4 innings tonight
24 runs 24 hits currently lol
Hill is 5 for 5 with 5 rbi and adams isnt even playing
I’ll bet Adams is pissed about that….
Copeland is also rehabbing in the GCL.
