Not much offense in the upper minors today, save for a homer by a certain Hawaiian. Another solid outing by Carlos Martinez, if a bit shaky in the control department, as the system goes 2-4.
- Lou Montanez went 2-3 with his first home run of the year.
- Mark Hamilton hit his 15th dinger of the year and walked.
- It was a bullpen day for Memphis and they featured Nick Greenwood, Adam Reifer, John Gaub and Sam Freeman. Greenwood gave up 3 runs in 3.0 IP but Reifer was worse, throwing only .2 IP but letting in 5 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks.
- Kolten Wong was 2-4 with a home run.
- Oscar Taveras was 0-3 with a walk.
- Xavier Scruggs had a double and a walk.
- Jermaine Curtis was 2-4.
- Carlos Martinez ran into some control issues, walking four batters, but still put together a decent outing with super-strong groundball tendencies. He went 5.0 IP.
- Cody Stanley is slowly working his way up from the sub-Mendoza level he had reached in past. He was 2-4.
- Chris Edmondson was also 2-4 with a home run.
- Chris Corrigan was knocked around for 10 hits in 5 IP
- David Bergin was 2-3.
- Matt Williams and Nick Martini each had a double.
- Willy Paulino gave up 4 runs in 6.0 IP, striking out 3 and walking 1.
- Hitting machine Breyvic Valera was 3-5 with a triple today. Breyvic has excellent contact skills but has been severely lacking in the patience department, forcing him to hit for a high average to be successful.
- Danny Stienstra was 4-5 with a double.
- Patrick Wisdom was 1-3 with a pair of walks.
- Stephen Ramos was 2-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
- Gary Apelian was 3-4.
- Tim Cooney only struck out one batter but still cruised through 5.0 IP, giving up 1 run and 6 hits.
- Joseph Scanio threw two perfect innings with 3 strike outs.
- C.J. McElroy, Leandro Mateo, Jeremy Schaffer and Carson Kelly were all 2-4.
- Trevor Martin was 3-4 with a double.
- Lance Jeffries had a triple and a walk.
- Starlyn Lopez walked 4 and struck out 5 in 5.0 IP, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits.
- Michael Aldrete struck out 4 in a pair of perfect innings.

Memphis lost a doubleheader. First game was 4-2. Lyons took the loss and Kozma had a homer.
Lyons had a 11Ks in 7 IP with 2BBs. His K rate has been impressive in AAA.
If you take out the 5.03 ERA on Tyler Lyons he has actually pitched decent at Triple A. Lyons in 53.2 IP 3.80 FIP 13 BB/57 K 9.56 K/9 2.18 BB/9 25.9 k rate 5.9 walk rate has held opponents to .233 avg and a stat that impressed me in his tenure with Memphis in 9 starts 1.14 WHIP though he has surrendered 8 HR.
Lyons is a little old for his # of years experience but not many guys do what he is doing in their second year as a pro. He also has a great lefty split. Decent chance to see him in STL next year I’d think.
19-year old relief pitcher Dixon Llorens, unhittable at Johnson City, has been promoted to Quad Cities.
Good to see Kolten Wong making adjustments in his approach. His 8th HR coming off Royals top prospect LHP Mike Montgomery. Wong really has looked over matched at the plate in the past week his leg kick keys his timing and his leg kick has kicked his timing off a bit in the past week hope that HR last night will get him going.
Also heard a report that Carlos Martinez’s stuff and velocity has looked great in his past 3-4 starts his defense hasn’t been helping him at all but since coming back from his injury he’s really turned himself into more of a groundball type pitcher his delivery is also different less violent as it was described.
3rd Rounder LHP Tim Cooney is having a solid start through 7 games 5 GS this season 30.1 IP 2BB/ 18K. He’s only averaging 5.34 K/9 but he’s had solid command so far 0.59 BB/9 and a gaudy WHIP of 0.99 his groundball rate is 56% as well. The question mark was for Cooney can his command be more consistent it has so far. He really does have good stuff fastball that will sit 85-91 MPH, alright secondary pitches cutter, curve-ball, and a change-up. Intriguing prospect.
Tim McKernan relayed this note from Joe Strauss, said on 590am ITD Morning After, via twitter:
“Strauss: I do think bringing Oscar Taveras up is on the table. I know it’s being talked about internally.”
That would be a surprise move, I would assume Taveras would get a lot of ab’s as part of a cf rotation.
Interesting… Still doubt it happens and find it very unlikely, but still very intriguing.
Strauss also said in his chat last week that although it was being discussed internally, he would be surprised for them to make that move. I agree – is he really ready?
When has 85-91 ever been considered good stuff?
Rich average fastball velocity for left handed is 88-89 I believe. Can’t. Really comment in Cooneys make up haven’t seen or hear a lot on him
Haven’t we learned about harping on the BB rate with Taveras the last two years? Valera is just good and couldn’t be hitting .350 if he didn’t have a good out and know how to hit good hitters pitches.
Didn’t have a good eye I mean.
Mark Hamilton is on a 35 HR pace since his first month.
With that said, it’s still very difficult to see him on this 40-man roster in 2013. It’s very possible he could be off it before the end of this season.
He’s fallen behind Adams and Craig on the 1B depth chart. Theoretically, he’d need Berkman, Craig, Adams, and Carpenter to go down before he would get a look at 1B in STL. Might be best to try and trade him to give him a shot with a team desperate for some 1B depth.
Good to see he got his power stroke back after last year.
