The good Shelby Miller made an appearance right before the trade deadline.  Overall the farm system went 5-1.  Jermaine Curtis continues to hit and Michael Wacha had a very successful Palm Beach debut.  On to the good stuff….

  1. DT Flush says:

Shelby Miller was sitting 92-95 topped 96-97 on his FB according to reports also was painting the outside part of the zone last night. Used his curve-ball early and often in the count. Miller struck out Borbon on a curve-ball on his last pitch in the 7th.

    • DT Flush says:

Showed great mound presence and held his plus velocity throughout his outing.

    • Charlie says:

I’ve asked this before concerning Shelby Miller:

Didn’t he lose a significant amount of weight in the off season? Weren’t the Cardinals disappointed he reported to camp so light?

Could that be why he lost the zing on his fastball earlier in the year?

I wonder if Miller has yet to fully mature physically. I still believe he’s going to be a terrific big league pitcher, although it may take a little longer than most of us had hoped.

      • BigRob says:

From what I understand, Miller did lose weight in the offseason, but it was body fat, not muscle.

It was a misunderstanding between Miller and the organization. They wanted him to get in better “pitcher” shape by adding weight. Miller thought they wanted him to get into better shape health-wise. So during the offseason he dropped percentages off his body fat and become more tone. That is very healthy, but not what the Cardinals wanted.

        • cj says:

I just read recently that one executive said miller was not in very good pitching shape (not sure how Overwight, under, lost muscle or what) and that the stuff coming out of his hand was just not what it use to be. Forgot where i saw that but kind of worriesome.

Although I’m very concerned i’m not ready to give up on him at all and I still think he has solid #2 starter celing.

  2. Ken Boyer Fan says:

All Breyvic Valera does it hit! I’m hoping he develops some more pop!

    • Gruntosaurus says:

Unfortunately, included among the things he doesn’t do (other than hit) is “walk.” His walk percentage is way too low for him to have a leadoff hitter’s toolkit, which is what a high-average, low-power guy otherwise looks like. Furthermore, a shortage of walks with a singles hitter in the low minors is a different proposition than, say, Adams, or even Taveras (whose walk percentage has increased anyway). If he doesn’t learn to take walks, better pitchers will get him out by challenging him directly, since the risk if he actually makes contact is low. That certainly isn’t the case with Griz, where “challenging” him with balls in the strike zone will create lots of juicy souvenirs for people in the right-field bleacher seats.

I’m with you, though. He’s small enough that I don’t think the power will come, but if he can learn to take a walk, this guy may have a real future, because he can sure hit (singles).

  3. Zach says:

So Eduardo Sanchez….what’s the deal? He’s been horrible all year now – is he hurt? Hard to believe a pitcher can regress so much so fast

    • DT Flush says:

That shoulder injury last season has regressed his electric stuff and consistent command and mechanics this season.

      • BigRob says:

Is it possible that they are trying to alter his mechanics? Possibly trying to make his motion less violent and take some stress off the shoulder while also improving command. Just a thought. Haven’t heard anything.

  4. DT Flush says:

Siegrist the southpaw with a low 90s fastball continues to be effective. Also nice debut for Wacha transitioning from GCL to High A Palm Beach.

Raw toolsy 2B Starlin Rodriguez is having a solid offensive year in the pitcher friendly FSL he’s now OPSing .839. That OPS is 73 points higher than Kolten Wong’s .766 OPS. Rodriguez is an intriguing prospect that should develop more power as well down the road because of that plus bat speed.

and Breyvic Valera continues to show why he belongs in Quad Cities.

  5. BigRob says:

The world is a much better place when Shelby pitches well.

  6. illinoiscardinalfan says:

It is nice to know that there still is a good Shelby Miller.

  7. Lou Schuler says:

Overall, Ramsey is off to a great start — .375 wOBA, 133 wRC+ — but he’s also piling up the strikeouts: 11 in his last 4 games, and 34 in 26 games overall. His K rate is up to 28.6%.

Probably just a SSS glitch. He’s still about a year younger than the median player in the FSL, and he and Wacha may be the only players in the league who’re still in their first summer of pro ball.

  8. dixie_flyer says:

I saw where OT was pinch hit for in the 5th inning last night. Does anyone know why?

  9. michael says:

Read on viva el birdos that Joe Strauss reported cardinals are thinking about bringing ot up. Not that is why he was pulled though.

    • DT FLush says:

Mozeliak told post dispatch last week that they will leave Taveras in Double A for the playoff stretch and that he’s only 20 years old.

  10. Hugecardsfan says:

I still think Siegrist gets no respect. Not a purposeful slight…just that the kid is going to have a bigger impact than folks think.

    • azruavatar says:

Middling strikeout rates, midling walk rates. Unless they move him to the pen and he moves forward as a reliever, I don’t see him advancing to the majors.

      • cj says:

second that azru, a day or 2 ago i expressed doubt that Ferrara or Seigrist have much chance in the majors as starters but maybe they could make it in the pen.

  11. Gruntosaurus says:

I notice that Matt Adams did not play yesterday. Something going on? Injury? Just a day off?

  12. Cardinals645 says:

Extremely heartening to see such great performances from Miller and Wacha. I really hope Miller turns the corner here. He’s still very young, so it’s not cataclysmic to see him struggle a bit this year, but it’s still unspeakably more assuring to see him pitch the way he did last night than how he has most of this season.

  13. dixie_flyer says:

Cox is apparently traded to the Fish for Mujica…seems like a good get for Miami

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/07/cardinals-acquire-edward-mujica.html

  14. illinoiscardinalfan says:

Not a whole lot of value for Cox, a 28 yr old middle reliever/set up man.
