There were only four games played down on the farm and the teams split them down the middle with a record of 2-2. Oscar Taveras, Greg Garcia and Xavier Scruggs helped make up for a terrible start from Seth Maness in a game that ended up as a Springfield win. It was a bad night for starters in general with the exception being Sam Gaviglio who pitched a gem which powered Quad Cities to a win. Let’s get to the good stuff…..

Sam Gaviglio is an intriguing groundball specialist/control pitcher. Gaviglio doesn’t have overpowering stuff but has a mid-to-high 80s fastball with a lot of sink that produces a ton of groundballs has above average command and a plus change-up and solid slider in his repertoire.
Gaviglio has a 4.46 ERA in 18 starts, 3.76 FIP, doesn’t walk a lot of batters 5.6 walk rate 19.6 k rate 57.1% groundball rate but a 1.39 WHIP.
Stephen Piscotty now has 10 doubles in only 89 AB lot’s more doubles in the future because of his line drive swing/stroke. Hope that line drive swing that produces doubles produces more HR as he develops.
Greg Garcia now has a .393 wOBA and a 146 wRC+ this season good to see him hit for more power also. Garcia could play a solid utility role or be an everyday SS with the way he get’s on base on a consistent basis still lacks the range of a SS but will make the fundamental play.
The toolsy 2B Starlin Rodriguez continues to be a hit machine. His line .307/.384/.455/.839 .385 wOBA 139 wRC+.
Piscotty and Ramsey have been decent so far but I have not seen anything to get too excited about. Since one was a junior and the other a senior, I guess I would have liked to see a little more of a splash out of both of them. Am I expecting too much here?
piscotty has a 133 wRC+, ramsey a 123 wRC+. those seem like pretty respectable numbers to put up in one’s first 100 PAs of full-season ball right out of college.
as a comp of guys drafted late, allen craig started out of college in batavia and didn’t play palm beach until age 23 (putting up a 147 wRC+). david freese had a quick stop in low A ball, and then posted a 152 wRC+ at A ball at 23.
piscotty is 21, ramsey 22 (23 in december). so, i think their numbers about right. they are being thrown in the deep end as prospects go. they also should both get another 100 PAs or so, which will tell us more.
The LOOGY Sam Freeman has only given up 2 runs since July 1st that’s 12 appearances and a sample of 13 2/3 innings pitched sample size. Freeman owns an ERA of 1.89 in 33 games 38 IP has held LH hitters to a .188 AVG and owns a 83.2 LOB% this season. Freeman has been an effective asset out of that depleted Memphis pen.
i tweet kevin goldstein and keith law at least once a day about greg garcia never get a response on their thoughts of him
They will eventually take notice, they will have to. I definitely view him more as a 2B/utility guy than everyday SS but he has been doing very, very well.
Garcia has done extremely well this season, and last year after being promoted to the FSL. I agree with your assessment though, because he has had some pretty severe platoon splits in both leagues. Against LHP this year, Garcia has a .205/.344/.301 line with 29 K’s in 73 at bats.
I’m not sure where to find his splits from the FSL last season, but I remember looking at them in the off-season when they were still posted on milb.com and they were similarly severe. Until that changes, he’s not going to project as anything more than a back up.
He had a .523 OPS against LHP last year in the FSL, and a .581 OPS overall against LHP in 125 total PAs. Garcia has not shown the ability to hit LHP.
In the Springfield game Butler’s save came in the 10th. Rondon blew the save in the 9th, but Springfield came back and won in the 10th.
Corrected. Thanks.
Interesting mix of the old and new in the GCL game.
Foody pitched the first 4 innings (5 hits, 2 ER, 2 K, 0 BB).
He was followed by Josh Wilson, our 2nd round pick in 2005, who hadn’t pitched in MiLB since 2009 (1 IP, 3 hits, 2 ER).
Wilson was followed by Kurt Heyer, last seen pitching for Arizona in the CWS, making his pro debut (1 IP, 0 hits or BB, 2 K).
Overall it’s a non-encouraging year for some of our fringe prospects in the GCL. In particular, I keep hoping to see Kenny Peoples-Walls take off. I get the impression he’s a pretty slick SS, just because the box scores show a lot of DPs. But in 27 games he has just 20 hits and 27 total bases, with a .286 OBP. He turns 19 in a couple of weeks, so he’s still young for the league.
What’s the deal with Wilson? Did we just re-sign him?
fwiw, Kevin Goldstein has OT ranked #4 on his midseason top 50 list
Wonder what Jason Parks would rank OT and his violent controlled swing he’s been gushing on OT a lot this season.
he said top 3 on twitter
Parks had OT #2 behind Profar and said he’d take him as the #1 hitter to profile as middle of the order in the minor leagues.
o beat me to it heh
and he ranked him #2 on his updated list today of those still in minors
I wonder if OT will still be in the minors at season’s end?
OT will still be in the minors at season end. He’s only 20 years old let him experience the playoff run in SPF.
