I thought that it was a bold move for the Rangers to promote Olt all the way from Frisco to the majors…would the Cardinals dare do the same with OT? Speaking of OT, I noticed that he had 3 walks last night.
I noticed the walks too. OT has had 9 walks in his last 10 games, all against the Arkansas teams. Has he figured something out with plate discipline, or are those teams simply breaking the unwritten rule that you don’t pitch around prospects in the minors?
they were pitching around him i believe
i know they intentionally walked him at least once
They did with Pujols…I don’t think Olt is Pujols. I don’t think this is a good move.
I don’t know how bold it is. Olt is almost 24, and the same age as Matt Adams.
You nailed it. In addition to that, skipping AAA is also pretty common for prospects.
For elite prospects, it’s common. For guys like Rosenthal and Cleto, it’s a story.
Not sure if we want to push OT too fast. Would you push Jay to a bench role? Personally, I’m a Jay fan. His defense is underrated
If they bring up OT, then pushing Jay to the bench would be the obvious choice. Jay needs to be good defensively because he has been scuffling at the plate lately — his OPS is around .650 since April. At this point, I’m not sure if OT could handle CF in the majors though.
They also have Chambers already on the roster.
true, but I don’t think that they’d bring OT up to sit on the bench
I would only bring up Oscar if the Cards fall completely out of contention. I doubt that happens. If you bring up OT, then he will play everyday and Jay will sit. This gives him valuable exposure to the MLB for next season. Even elite prospects scuffle in their first taste of the show. I’d be happy to get OT a little along in his learning curve this season but there will likely be a cost. If we are still in the race, I think John Jay gives us the best chance to win … at least in 2012. The other possibility is a cup of coffee in Sept. just to allow him to sit on the bench and soak up the atmosphere, maybe pinch hit and play a few innings in blow outs.
is ben freeman the next borderline-decent strikeout-rate, low walk-rate lefty? Seems to have been fairly consistent since being drafted, though it has all been in the low minors. What’s his stuff like? is he going to get hammered as he advances? seems to be giving up consistent contact, but not to the point that it’s worrisome.. yet.
The soft tossing southpaw Kyle Hald now has a K:BB ratio of 14.73 in 19 starts 109.1 IP. Pretty impressive still would like to see how his above average control and average stuff fares out against more advanced hitters before giving him any more prospect attention.
Good to see Samuel Tuivailala only walk a batter and K 4 in 2 IP last night. Hope that’s signs of improving command he’s got some very good stuff even though he lacks a lot of mound time and is raw on the pitching side was reported he was once again sitting in the upper 90s again on his fastball.
Illdemaro Vargas is having a good season looking at his numbers looks like he makes consistent contact in almost every AB .316/.386/.414/.800 48-for-152 sample 1 HR 15 RBI 12 doubles. I’ve heard that he’s got a line drive type swing makes good contact. Is one of the best defenders on the JC team also has excellent range for a 2B.
Nice transition start from GCL for the 6th round pick in 2011 Adam Ehrlich in his first game in short season. His defense is very solid behind the plate question is can he hit that’s a good start.
Piscotty now with 11 doubles in 94 AB impressive I like his line drive stroke that produces a ton of doubles. Also some other numbers that are impressive .392 wOBA 144 wRC+ .844 OPS.
Piscotty is hitting like you’d expect a college star to hit at A ball. I’m curious if he’s going to be getting a short end of season stint at A+ or be one of the reps at the AFL.
Mariano/Dixon Llorens
He was drafted as “Dixon Llorens” but I noticed the other day on The Cardinal Blog he was listed as “Mariano Llorens”. Not sure why all the flip flopping, but he was drafted as Dixon.
Cole Brand escapes the GCL after 2.5 years!
