An interesting research project….The piggyback rotation for all the cardinal pitchers and where are they now.
If I was making a top 10 Cards prospect list right now, I don’t see how I could leave Greg Garcia off of it. Would you guys agree?
A MI of Wong and Garcia (or sooner if Furcal gets hurt) starting in 2014 sounds good to me…..
Our system is so deep that I probably wouldn’t gave Garcia on it…yet. I still like Ryan Jackson at SS but Garcia could be a nice compliment to him.
Garcia is in my Top 20, maybe even Top 15, but not Top 10 as of 8/3/2012.
Let’s assume Jackson has SS locked down. Not advocating it but please play along for hypothetical. Would you consider moving Garcia ahead of Wong on the depth chart @ 2b, perhaps sending him to AFL to play the position? Garcia may have the better bat. Still, it would be a logistical problem. Both move to AAA next year and only one can be the everyday 2B. The Cardinals are trying to make Tyler Greene a 2B at the major league level (as they had with Skip) but I’d hate to repeat the process.
Greg Garcia has played almost as many minor league games at 2B as SS (114 to 137). If Greg Garcia goes to the AFL, I don’t care if he plays SS or 2B; what he needs to do is work on hitting LHP, because right now he’s a platoon guy.
if we end up with a homegrown middle infield, the platoon split between garcia and jackson could be interesting to exploit. garcia this year – .624 OPS v. LHP, .896 v. RHP. jackson this year – .855 v. LHP, .688 v. RHP.
putting wong, garcia, and jackson in a rotation could be a good way to get all three of them some exposure, with wong getting the bulk of time at second and garcia spelling him occasionally, with garcia and jackson swapping time at shortstop based on the handedness of the pitcher.
sorry, that split data is from 2011 & 2012 cumulatively for both.
An interesting idea (rotation to take advantage of platoon splits). I like it. Didn’t realize Greg Garcia had played so much 2B. That only ads to the intrigue. In my view, the guy has hit his way into the discussion of the Cardinals future MI plans. But Springfield is Springfield (and the Texas League is the Texas League), the field of dreams. Only time will tell how each of the players turns out as a prospect. Next year at AAA will be interesting for Garcia and Wong. I wonder if Jackson will be with the Cards in 2013 or still in AAA? If so, Garcia has to start somewhere. Wong has to start. Maybe they try to Garcia at 3B if Jackson is still in AAA to start the year.
Garcia had about a year in the system longer than Wong and during that time, he mostly played 2b.
Garcia has no business being in the top ten. There is just too much talent in front of him for him to be ranked that high. The Cardinals system is quite deep in talent, and he’s not better than Taveras, Martinez, Miller, Wong, Rosenthal, Gast, Wacha, Kelly, Adams, Jenkins, etc. He’s maybe a top 20 prospect. He’s a career utility middle infielder, not a starting one on a championship caliber team.
Not yet, but possibly soon. Kelly won’t be a “prospect” after this year, Adams may not either, depending on how long Berkman is out, and I think Jenkins has lost some ground this season. I don’t think it’s inconceivable that Garcia could come in at the very bottom of the top-10 list for next year. His stock has definitely risen.
Tyrell Jenkins just turned 20 years old a little over a month ago and is in his first year of full season ball. He hasn’t lost any ground.
Not sure Berkman’s absence will have a lot of impact on Adams. Robinson has been added to the 25 man. As long as Craig and Beltran are able to play, Adams is probably best utilized in Memphis.
Kelly is almost assuredly no longer going to be a prospect.
agree with Karmaloop..
Jorge Rondon promoted to Triple A. Michael Blazek back down to Double A. Rondon has added a cutter to his repertoire in ST to compliment his put away slider and mid 90s straight fastball he’s had much better command of his pitches than he did last season walk rate is down by a couple of points and he’s pitching to contact more with a 49.5% groundball rate and still has maintained a solid 20.7% k rate. This will be a test for Rondon will be interesting to see how his stuff plays out in PCL facing more advanced hitters.
Rondon was consistenly 97 mph when he pitched in Midland on July 8
Rosie pitching in lieu of Lyons. 4 K’s after 2 no hit no walks innings.
What is the TI list? Sam Freeman is on it.
“Temporarily inactive”? Maybe it’s used to cover guys who need a few days away for a family or personal issue?
I believe the Kelly on the top 10 list is the 2012 2nd round pick, not Joe Kelly. Before anyone puts G. Garcia ahead of Wong, remember, he is a year older and at Wongs age was playing at AA.
