in looking back at the most recent DFR, i see blair was terrible in his debut at PB.

but yes, if only we'd known that he'd pitched 3 innings in the GCL, allowed a hit, two walks, and a strikeout, we could have drawn some reasonable conclusions from that.

i don't think the appy league stats are terribly significant, though clearly moreso than the GCL stats from glorified scrimmages. the GCL is like year-long spring training for 17 and 18 year olds.

in the past, the prospect community has been far more guilty of overrating lower-level stats (leading to unwarranted optimism on Nick Longmire and Niko Vasquez) than not considering lower-level stats. since there's good evidence that short-season ball stats have very limited value, i can't imagine what value instructional league stats would have. i can't point to a single prospect whose path would have been clearer if we'd followed him from the GCL.

i'd be against adding GCL stats to FR because 1) i think adding more work would make it harder to keep a volunteer staff putting out good content, 2) i think most readers would find the information unhelpful; 3) i think the comments section would see a lot of uninformed posters reading far too much into GCL stats.

i really don't care whether seth blair strikes out 3 guys or 6 guys in a given day in the GCL. even if a 23 year old starts striking out 17-year-olds in an instructional league by the truckload, he won't really be a prospect until he starts doing it at Quad Cities. i'm interested in whether guys at the GCL level get released, injured, or promoted, but otherwise, their day-to-day stats are pretty meaningless.

not being "comprehensive" is not really a complaint. FR could add DSL stats, too, to be comprehensive. i'd rather the site be "useful" or "interesting" than "comprehensive." i don't think GCL day-to-day updates qualify as useful or interesting other than as a curiosity.

Tom S.:
1. Even if they mean "next to nothing"--which I doubt--that isn't nothing. A lot of significant prospects get their starts there. How much more significant is the App League in your scheme of things?
2. If adding a seventh is a major burden, so be it. The site, for all its virtues, thus remains less than comprehensive.
3. I do look them up. This isn't the only site I follow. At least one is far more comprehensive than this one. I do like this one, however, because of the knowledge and passion of the commentators and their comments. So far, I'm afraid this doesn't include you.
4. Not you apparently. I suspect that, unlike you, most who come to this site retain some interest in the development, or failure to develop, of a top Cardinal draft choice.

So after all the arguing you did with me over on my GCL post, it turns out you actually agree with me. Huh! Go figure.

A) gulf coast results mean next to nothing.
B) the staff here already put together 6 levels worth of results.
C) if you're so concerned about the GCL, look up the results yourself.
D) who cares about Seth Blair?

Thats the Miller we all grew accustom to last year. 7 strong with 0 BBs and 8K's and it took less than 100 pitches which is a great sign. Been much better of late and hopefully he is on his way to finishing the year strong.
