Yea, Azru needs to retract this headline. The article says that he’ll be going back to school while he is rehabbing and may volunteer as a coach during that time. I think the article also contains a typo that should read “volunteering for the fall 2012 season and winter 2013 season.” That length of time is consistent with two semesters’ worth of time and the 9-month rehab.

There is very little reason for a young player to retire after an ACL injury like this.

Yeah this surgery has been highly refined to the point where I doubt it would affect a baseball player that much. A lot of running backs recover from this surgery to be 90+ percent of what they were, I would be more concerned for someone like Derrick Rose who really depended on quickness and lateral movement making it all the way back.

I submitted the link and agree with cardzilla. Having watched Alex play for a few years, I feel sure he’ll work to rehab and start his pro career anew 9 months from now.

Bummer, though. He’s a great person and a very good player.

azru read the article wrong. its ok everyone. he mistook quote of a post playing for career ending. post playing could be anywhere from 2 yrs to 10 yrs. the az head coach thinks whenever it up, that what he’ll do.

I don’t see why this would end his career unless he just doesn’t want to play pro ball. ACL injuries are not the death sentence they used to be for athletes that depend on quickness and agility. For example, last november Mizzou rb Henry Josey had a knee injury that the team doctor called the worst he’s ever seen. Josey was on the practice field this week and could maybe play this season.

The “excerpt” is essentially the whole article, or at least all of it that deals with Mejia.

Just how bad is an ACL blowout for a speed-and-quickness athlete? It’s certainly something that some athletes (e.g. distance runners) can come back from, given time and motivation, but he didn’t get drafted for his potential to run marathons.

Nothing in the quoted excerpt from the Arizona paper says anything about his career being over. Either the Future Redbirds headline is erroneous or there is more to the story than is indicated in the quotation. Sloppy reporting in either case.

If it all goes well, a 9-month rehab would put him on track to return to the NY-P for the 2013 season. The timing just happens to work out in a way that allows him to attend 2 semesters at Arizona and finish his degree, which seems like a great way for him to use his downtime.

The only way I see this ACL tear being career ending is if his love and desire to play the game have vanished. I don’t think that’s the case.
