Nice to see Walsh back among the living.

I see that you mercifully omitted John Gaub from the Memphis report. For completeness: he pitched one inning, gave up 2 runs, and took the loss with no redeeming features that I am aware of. Isn’t it about time to admit that this acquisition was a mistake and remove the guy from the 40-man, in favor of someone who can actually play?

So how long is Adams’ rehab going to take? Is his surgery considered serious?

I am salivating over this idea come 2014

    3 positions: RF, CF, 1B

4 Players: Craig, Jay, Tavares, Adams

What do you all think the solution will be at SS long term? Jackson? Free agent?

    • BigRob says:

I want to see Jackson get the first crack at it. Also, I’m not sure how much talent will be on the free agent market at SS. Teams generally try to lock up their good, young SS long term. We’d probably be looking at a SS on the talent level of someone like Cesar Izturis or Ryan Theriot. In my opinion, we’d be better off saving a couple million and getting the same production out of Ryan Jackson.

I don’t want to rule out the possibility of a trade, however. As we all know, the Cardinals have a lot of pitching depth starting to creep into the high minors. There isn’t going to be room for all of them at the MLB level (unless you hold onto guys in AAA until they are 25-27 waiting for their chance). Therefore, I could see the Cardinals packaging some of those pitching prospects and sending them somewhere for an above average SS (I’m looking at you, Elvis Andrus).

      • PJ says:

Elvis Andrus, Danny Espinosa, Dee Gordon could all be made available for the right players (Matt Carp, Joe Kelly, etc)

        • Lou Schuler says:

I’ve also thought it would come to that eventually: a gutsy trade involving some of our top prospects or young major leaguers for another team’s top young shortstop.

Hard to look at Jackson or Greg Garcia and see a full-time major-league shortstop. Reports say Jackson has the glove for the position, and stats say Garcia has the bat. But nobody seems to think either guy has both, which puts both of them on track to become utility players (although Garcia could probably be a solid second baseman for a team with less organizational depth at the position).

          • TomBruno23 says:

Yeah, Jackson is for sure on track to be a utility guy. A good utility guy, but a utility guy.

          • Forsch31 says:

I’d still like to see Jackson to get the opportunity. His batting has improved since he was drafted, and I wouldn’t pass judgment on him just yet, especially since shortstop is a prime position that Jackson has shown he can play at above average. If the defense is truly as good as advertised, I’d rather give him time and continue to let the hitting develop, even at the major league level. Heck, even Ozzie managed to become a decent hitter toward the latter part of his career.

            • DT Flush says:

Every level that Jackson’s has advanced in he’s progressed with the bat every season. If he can hit for an ML average while playing his above average defense at SS he will be an everyday player. Don’t sleep on Greg Garcia either his OBP and incredible plate discipline alone will get him to the majors.

        • Gruntosaurus says:

It’s hard to see Gordon or Espinosa as enough of an improvement on what’s in the pipeline to warrant a big deal for them. Andrus, now … With Jurickson Profar on the way up, Texas is going to be a “motivated seller” in the off season. The question is, what do we have that would interest them? Andrus is definitely an upgrade on Jackson or Garcia, but he’s still not enough of one to trade a Miller or a Taveras for him.

          • BigRob says:

I agree about Gordon and Espinosa.

With regard to Andrus and what Texas may want in return: I think this season has shown that Texas will look hard to improve their starting pitching in the offseason.

Now, obviously, I’m not going to give up a Miller or Taveras type of talent. But I would be willing to part with Joe Kelly, John Gast, Maikel Cleto, Seth Maness, Tyrell Jenkins, or similar pitchers. I’m going to keep my starting pitching prospects like Miller, Rosenthal, Martinez, and Wacha (even though he can’t be traded until July ’13).

          • PJ says:

There is some speculation that Kinsler could move to the outfield if Hamilton is not retained.

I think Espinosa would be a decent get. He gives you some power, some speed, some glove, versatility. It depends how comfortable they are with Rendon/Lomborzzi at 2nd.

            • bc says:

I would find it hilarious (in a bitter, cynical way) to give away Tyler Greene because he K’s too much only to sign his Latin doppelgänger, Danny Espinosa.

    • Indiana Cardinal says:

Food for thought…..Andrus is signed for 2013 and 2014 and then I think he is a free agent. Borat is his agent. While Texas has Profar, I doubt that they would trade Andrus cheaply. With Borat at the controls there is a good chance that you are talking about a 2 year rental.

Not likely to happen, but I would load up the Orioles for Machado. Lozano is his agent. Although he repped Albert, at least they made peace with him on the Beltran signing and Machado would be controlled for at least 5 and a half years. Again I highly doubt Baltimore would trade him, but everyone has a price.

Unfortunately there are not many shortstop prospects available, and particularly not at High A or closer.

      • PJ says:

I think even Oscar can be traded if the name Manny Machado starts getting mentioned.

        • Indiana Cardinal says:

I agree, but I don’t know how much the Cards would have to additionally give to get the Orioles to bite….if they would at all, because of the different valuation of stud shortstops compared to studs at other positions. Nice to think about, but again, highly unlikely.

        • Hugecardsfan says:

Boy do I hope the Cards FO disagrees with you. OT’s bat is the most unique since AP. I wouldn’t trade him for any SS save a younger (cost controlled) version of Troy Tulowitsky. To be mesmerized by Machado’s SSS 19 AB’s in the majors smacks of puppy love. The guy has been an .800 OPS hitter in the minors and to suddenly expect differently in the majors is foolish. There isn’t enough of a delta beyond Jackson’s glove and bat to be worth OT. I don’t know how anybody fails to see that.

      • jjray says:

Borat is now an agent? Wow. He has got to be the first Kazakhstani to make it as an MLB agent.

    • wileyvet says:

PJ is it too late to move us to the American League so we can take advantage of the DH.

  5. DT Flush says:

Good to see Piscotty and his line drive doubles stroke showing some raw power potential in that stroke. Piscotty .370 wOBA 130 wRC+ impressive in his first season.
