Thanks to the FR crew for covering my last few DFRs while I was off getting married and honeymoonin’.
Tonight, the system went 3-and-3. It’s difficult to pick an offensive standout tonight, but QC’s attack was balanced as every single player in the lineup contributed at least 1 hit. There were several laudable pitching performances. Details after the jump…
Memphis 2, Salt Lake City 5
- Pete Kozma hit his 10th HR in a 2-for-4 night.
- Lou Montanez was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Adron Chambers singled and walked batting leadoff.
- Eugenio Velez walked.
- Steven Hill, Lance Zawadzki, and Jose Garcia singled.
- New acquisition, Brock Peterson, played first base and went hitless tonight.
- Tyler Lyons pitched very well over 6.1 innings, only allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts.
- Nick Greenwood then surrendered 3 runs (2 earned) in 1.2 innings; he struck out 1 and walked 1.
- Jorge Rondon struck out 2 in 1 IP that included 1 hit.
- Adam Melker hit his 8th HR.
- Greg Garcia was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Kolten Wong, Jermaine Curtis, Xavier Scruggs, and Alan Ahmady (PH) singled.
- Oscar Taveras singled and walked.
- Jamie Romak walked twice.
- While not quite Felix-esque, Kevin Siegrist didn’t allow any hits over 5 innings. He had 3 strikeouts against 2 walks.
- Kevin Thomas allowed 3 hits but only 1 run in 2.2 innings that included 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.
- Michael Blazek recorded the last 4 outs (3 by strikeout); he permitted 1 hit and 1 walk.
- PB’s offense only mustered 2 hits and 2 walks tonight.
- James Ramsey and Cody Stanley walked.
- Rainel Rosario doubled.
- Ronny Gil singled.
- Ryan Sherriff allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits (2 HR), 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts; he only lasted 4 innings.

- Colin Walsh and Casey Rasmus were each 2-for-4 with a double.
- Nick Martini was 2-for-5 with 2 doubles.
- Stephen Piscotty singled and walked. He also made his 14th error.
- Anthony Melchionda was 2-for-4 with a walk.
- Nicholas Longmire singled.
- Bradley Watson scattered 8 hits over 7 strong innings. He only allowed 1 run, struck out 4, and avoided issuing walks.
- Ricky Martinez struck out 1 but allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 1 inning.
- Kyle Barraclough then struck out 1 en route to a perfect 9th inning.
- Breyvic Valera went 3-for-5 with a double.
- Steven Ramos was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Danny Stienstra, David Washington, and Gary Apelian each contributed 2 hits.
- Joe Cuda struck out 7 in 5 innings; he was only reached for 2 hits and 1 walk.
- Corey Baker followed suit by striking out 4 in 2 scoreless innings.
- Dyllon Nuernberg handled the final 2 frames to secure the shutout and save.
- Trevor Martin hit his 2nd HR and walked.
- Jeremy Schaffer doubled and walked.
- Cesar Valera went 2-for-4 with a double and stole his 6th base.
- Carson Kelly was 2-for-4.
- C.J. McElroy, Bruce Caldwell, Ricardo Lizcano, and Lance Jeffries singled.
- All JC prospects had miserable nights on the mound. Not one of Juan Bautista (3 IP, 7 R; 6 earned), Michael Aldrete (1.1 IP, 4 R), or Cole Brand (3.2 IP, 3 R) would escape his outing unscathed.

Kevin Siegrist was on a 70 pitch count that’s why he didn’t go deep into the game. From what I heard Siegrist was sitting in the low-to-mid 90s touched 97 once on his fastball (of course it was the SPF gun though) was using an effective change-up to compliment that fastball and of course his delivery is like he sides arm it.
Thanks for the details, Flush.
I’ll cheerfully ignore the 97 MPH nonsense… and take the consistent 91-93 from a wrongpaw; with any secondary stuff at all, that’s a potential #3/4 guy on a good team. Siegrist may only be the 9th or 10th best pitching prospect in the system… and that’s just another reason why it’s the best system in the game.
Fun Taveras numbers: leads league in batting average and hits; among the top 5 in doubles *and* triples *and* homers, and is easily the league leader in intentional walks, with 9. (Which is 9 more than Wil Myers had, though he hit .343/.414/.731 before his promotion to AAA.)
Think about that for a second. Managers know; they know you can pitch to Wil Myers. But you cannot pitch to the Puerto Punisher — because he has no weaknesses at the dish.
And, now that I think on it, has there ever been any minor leaguer, at any level, who has finished in the top 5 in each extra-base category? Is there a research whiz out there? ;)
Breyvic Valera continues his impressive knack of barreling everything right handed and left handed. Valera should start to get more prospect attention when he advances to higher levels he’s got some tools.
Wondering if there’s a chance Tyler Lyons get’s a chance in the majors this season pitching out of the bullpen in a LOOGY type role he’s got some intriguing splits against LH batters this season.
Sorry Andy, but since you just got back from your honeymoon, don’t you mean: “Details after the HUMP”. ((:
Well played. How did I miss that easy joke?
Easy, you’re probably more classy and tasteful then me! Ha! ha!
Kind of an interesting conundrum in QC. Now that Colin Walsh is back and finally playing LF, what to do with Piscotty who has 14 errors at 3b already in just 38 games. Can’t move Steven to LF now.
Walsh of course has DHed most of the year because of his poor defense and 11 clankers at 2b. SS Matt Williams has 34 boots. The combo of De La Cruz/Medina had over 20 misques at 1b. Catcher Juan Castillo has 12 errors and 15 past balls. In fact the QC team has kicked/thrown the ball around for 157 ERRORS. Just imagine the frustration level of the pitchers on this team! It wouldn’t surprise me if Rawlings asks the players to tape over the logos on their gloves.
A little soon to give up on Piscotty at third. As you stated above, he has only played 38 games at third as a professional baseballer.
I assume Piscotty has the arm to play RF. You can give up a little power if he can be an average RF.
Never can tell. I seen Mickey Mantle in KMO league when he was a teenager and he was playing shortstop. Absolutely had hands of steel but he could sure hit! Never know!!
Xavier Scruggs ties Taveras for the most RBIs in our system with 82. Scruggs power intrigues me, however I am sure the odds of him making it to the Cardinals is probably pretty slim with Craig and Adams also at first.
A nice trade chip?
He’s still just dug himself back to about .250 for his average, after a couple months sub-Mendoza. This is also (sort of) repeating the level. I think before he is considered too valuable or intriguing he needs to raise his average and OBP.
Again. Scruggs has intriguing power but strikes out to much (explained by the high k rate and hits for to low of an AVG for a 1B in the Texas League.
Who’d trade for him? Guys with that particular toolkit are a dime a dozen in the minors. Decent organizational guy to keep around until something better comes along or he gets tired of life on the bus, but trade chip, not really.
No. Not with his hitting profile.
I predict Piscotty will play of next year at PB while Wisdom plays 3b. might see Kelly playing 3rd at QC.
Kelly is likely to start at Batavia I would think.
I’m with you nmstar, no way Kelly is ready for QC next year. He either goes to Batavia or starts again in JC, which is where he probably should be. There is absolutely no need to rush this kid….and I do mean kid.
Piscotty is projected as a future corner OF with a strong plus throwing arm. Piscotty has line drive type stroke he will hit a lot more doubles than HR certainly does have an intriguing batting profile.
I’m just not sure on where the Cards see Piscotty fitting into their master plan. An outfielder with limited power is going to play where? Not in Allen Craig’s spot in RF. Not in Matt Holliday’s spot in LF. And certainly not in CF where Tavares or Jay will be. The only thing I can think of is a similar role to Skip Schumaker as the 4th outfielder, unless of course that’s Jon Jay and then you can bump him down to 5.
In reality, he and James Ramsey will probably develop into good trade bait. Although, as they say, anything can happen between now and 2015.
The PB offense has been terrible all year. Is it just the park? If it is Starlin Rodriguez should be a revelation next year in Springfield.
