Michael Wacha continues his excellence in his AA debut, John Gast is shaky coming off the DL and Johnson City has trouble fielding the ball as the system goes 2-4

Memphis 3, Iowa 6

  • Adron Chambers was 2-3 with a double and a pair of walks. He’s hitting .310 but devoid of power, with his slugging equal to his OBP.
  • Bryan Anderson and Steven Hill both hit doubles.
  • John Gast’s return from the DL (shoulder) was not nearly as successful as Jaime Garcia‘s. He walked 6 batters in just 1.1 innings of work and gave up a home run.
  • It was too little, too late, but the bullpen picked up Gast by shutting out Iowa for the remainder of the game. Nick Greenwood contributed 3.2 IP while Maikel Cleto, John Gaub and Victor Marte contributed 1 each.
  • Springfield 1, Corpus Christi 7

  • Kolten Wong has been heating up a touch with his third multi-hit game in a row, going 2-4.
  • Oscar Taveras was 1-3 with a double. He also had a throwing error.
  • Jermaine Curtis has surpassed Oscar Taveras for the team batting title, going 2-4 with a double and now batting .324.
  • Jamie Romak was 2-4 with a double.
  • Richard Castillo was wild, walking 5 in his 4.0 IP and hitting the opposing pitcher with a pitch. He gave up three runs, all earned.
  • Michael Wacha was excellent in his AA debut, pitching 3.0 IP and striking out 6 and walking 1. For those keeping track, that’s 29 strike outs and 2 walks in 16.0 IP at three separate stops in the minors.
  • Palm Beach 6, Fort Myers 4

  • James Ramsey was 1-3 and was caught stealing.
  • Alan Ahmady hit his second home run of the year.
  • Chris Edmondson hit a grand slam.
  • Todd McInnis lasted 5.1 IP, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits. He walked 2, struck out 6 and got all 10 of his other outs via the ground ball.
  • Aidan Lucas struck out 4 and walked a pair in 2.2 hitless innings
  • Zach Russell struck out 2 and walked a batter to close it out.
  • Quad Cities 5, Beloit 3

  • Matt Williams had an impressive day at the plate, hitting a double and his 6th home run.
  • Anthony Garcia also doubled.
  • Stephen Piscotty was 2-4.
  • The River Bandits pitching staff could not handle Miguel Sano, who went 3-4 with a home run and a double.
  • The Sano solo shot was Sam Gaviglio‘s only blemish, as he allowed just the 1 run on 5 hits over 7.0 IP without walking a batter. He struck out 4.
  • Batavia 7, Auburn 8

  • Steven Ramos went 3-5 with a double.
  • Breyvic Valera doubled.
  • Jacob Wilson went 2-4 with a home run.
  • Kyle Helisek wasn’t great, giving up 5 earned runs in 4.2 IP and getting only a single strike out.
  • Kevin Jacob wasn’t much better, striking out 5 but allowing 3 runs in 2.1 innings.
  • Christopher Thomas struck out a pair in a perfect inning.
  • Johnson City 2, Princeton 10

  • Leandro Mateo went 2-3, attempting to steal second both times but was successful once. He also committed two errors.
  • No one hit for extra bases in the Johnson City lineup.
  • Stalyn Lopez allowed 7 runs but only 1 of them was earned due to the parade of 4 errors committed by Johnson City. Lopez was a K machine in his 3.0 innings with 7 alongside 2 walks.
  • Jacob Booden had a less eventful outing in his 4.0 innings, allowing only 1 run and 1 hit, 2 Ks and a walk.
  • Cole Brand threw a couple innings, allowing 2 runs, a walk and 2 strike outs.

Very, very nice day of pitching by Gaviglio (who had 14 GB outs to 2 FBs) and Wacha. Milb.com has a short article about Wacha, with some quotes about working to improve his curve:

      http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120819&content_id=37010554&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb

Gaviglio has been good in 4 of his last 5 starts. It’d be interesting to know what is and isn’t working for him. I remember at the time of the 2011 draft reports said he topped out around 90 mph on his fastball. I assume that hasn’t changed.

    2. Kyle says:

Wacha is the pitching version of the 08 Brett Wallace.

    3. The DL says:

Thanks for the link to that article. Wacha sounds like a good kid, hopefully he continues to work hard to develop that curve.

      • DT Flush says:

That curve has made a lot of progress this season much tighter spin causing a 12-6 type break on it

        • DT Flush says:

it’s looked a lot more effective and sharp he’s getting more swings and misses off it as well. I’d say it’s still a below average to slightly average secondary offering right now.

So….so far so good on that 1st round pick.

So far so great! on that 1st round pick. It is only a small sample size but those eye popping strike out numbers should have him vaulting up the prospect lists for next year. Of course he still hasn’t started a game so we don’t really know what we have here but it is not hard to envision this kid following in the footsteps of Waino and Lynn and pitching out of the bullpen on the major league team next year.

    6. Indiana Cardinal says:

Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus in his “Monday Morning 10 Pack” of prospects writes up Seth Maness asking at the end “how far can you get with just 80 command and control”, suggesting that he is the type of pitcher that a team just keeps moving up until he fails.

    7. DT Flush says:

Was able to attend some of the Springfield game last night notes from it.

RHP Richard Castillo really doesn’t have overpowering stuff only sits in the mid-to-high 80s on his fastball but he mixes in a plus curve-ball that was sharp and showed a lot of late break he uses it as his put away pitch and relies on it to keep hitters off balance though he did struggle commanding it left a few hangers up in the zone but he did indeed get a lot of swings and misses off it. Has the same arm action and arm speed that keeps him equally tough on his curve-ball could till he didn’t have his best stuff last night. He’s been real inconsistent this season scouts were saying.

2B Kolten Wong got an excellent read on a sharply hit liner took a tremendous route to it made the catch and then double up the at 1B when the bases were loaded with nobody out. Wong is a definitely an above average defender at 2B with a very high Baseball IQ.

Oscar Taveras got a tremendous read and jump running down a fly ball to deep center field making a back handed catch covering a lot of ground in CF. Then later in that inning made another great running back handed catch showing some speed and reaction time in CF then made a strong throw to home showing off his above average arm that was straight on the line to the catcher. Taveras at the plate hit a Sac Fly to deep (400 foot Sac Fly) CF showing the violent controlled swing. Then later doubled down the 3B line on a sharply hit chopper showing his superb bat control he can place it wherever he wants.

Michael Wacha impressed me a lot. Wacha blew a 95 MPH fastball right by Austin Wates on his first K was down in the zone with some life completely fooling Wates after previously throwing a curve-ball in the dirt. Then later in Wacha’s outing he blew another 95 MPH with life on it to Astros top prospect Jonathan Singleton threw three change-ups for strikes in that AB (1 fouled off). On Wacha’s six consecutive K he threw his plus change-up with some fade that caused the Drillers hitter Chris Wallace to lose his bat/throw it and it almost hit a guy in the on deck circle.

Eric Fornataro pitches mainly from the windup in relief goes over his head in his delivery 3/4 arm slot. Sat 95-98 on his fastball (SPF gun has been known to be fast) and also showed a big loopy curve-ball with some hook and a big late break.

    8. cariocacarinal says:

Will Wacha crack many top 100 lists?

    9. cariocacarinal says:

Anyone know whether Tyler Lyons has major league stuff or if he is just another Nick Additon?

      • DT Flush says:

Lyons doesn’t have MLB stuff to be a starter long term his ceiling is a effective LOOGY. I’ve seen him pitch in person a couple of times doesn’t have overpowering stuff at all 86-88 consistent on his fastball and he showed a very sharp plus curve-ball with that over the top delivery that hides the ball well from LH hitters.
