    Shelby Miller: 7 IP, 2 R, 12 K, 0 BB, 1 HR

What a great start to this day. Can’t wait to see what Martinez does.

    • Lou Schuler says:

Only 87 pitches. Gave up the 2-run HR to a 30-year-old journeyman, then got the next 3 guys to finish the 7th.

The team was shut down by 2 former MLB pitchers, Seth McClung and Scott Maine.

Shelby may have been the only legit prospect on either team!

      • RCHIII says:

12 strike outs on only 87 pitches is just silly….

I assume you mean the only legitimate prospect “on the field” unless you have given up on Rosie already…

Last seven starts, 43 IP, and a 50-to-1 strikeout/walk ratio.

(Sidebar: Miller hasn’t allowed an un-earned run since sometime in June; perhaps that indicates something positive about his concentration level? Or it may mean nothing at all, of course.)

The kid has really adjusted over the past several weeks. I think he’s gotta be a September callup for bullpen depth — never know when you’re going to have, say, a 19-inning game. No one wants a repeat of LaRussa’s disastrous 2003 non-callup debacle in Wrigley Field….

50:1 ?? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seth Maness eat your heart out!

It seems like a good portion of the HR’s Shelby has given up the last several games have come in the later innings which could mean a) he’s tiring in the late innings b) some players are figuring him out the 2nd or 3rd time around c) or he is losing some concentration in the late innings.

shelby’s ground ball rate is really bad. He would drive Duncan nuts if he were to come back next year.

I really doubt Shelby comes up in Sept. He doesn’t have to go on the 40 man roster over the Winter so I think they’ll wait.

shelby is clearly a flyball/strikeout guy. i’m kind of glad that duncan isn’t going to butt heads with him. he’s keeping up his outstanding performance today, with 12 Ks and no walks today. i doubt he gets a call up this september, but it’s nice to see him make the decision tough for them.

it’s also nice to see them working on martinez to improve his GB rates, on the other hand.

        • DT FLush says:

Carlos Martinez has been a groundball pitcher ever since the organization revamped his delivery to be less violent causing him to hide the ball more effectively and cut down on his walks. Martinez has really become more polished at Springfield this season.

I knew that I should have played hookey this afternoon.

Brian Walton’s thoughts on Illdemaro Vargas

“Good on base guy. Rarely strikes out. Still in rookie ball at 21 though.”

The writer quotes Bryan Eversgerd, the Springfield pitching coach (and former Cardinals pitching prospect).
