Johnson City played a doubleheader and split with Bristol.  Shelby Miller and Carlos Martinez both turned in excellent starts with Silfredo Garcia crashing the party with a great start of his own for Johnson City.  In other news, Xavier Scruggs puts on a power display for Springfield and the Palm Beach game was postponed.  Let’s get to the good stuff….

hey, has anyone noticed Shelby Miller can pitch?

  3. RCHIII says:

    Free Lee!

I guess they aren’t going to do that at this point of the season, but figuring out where he starts next year might be an interesting discussion. Will I be surprised if he skips QC? No.

If you’re a Cardinal fan, and you’re not excited about the prospects at or above the AA level, you are as cool as a cucumber! I’m gushing!

      • illinoiscardinalfan says:

Although when you look at how good the system is looking right now, than the regular line up they are fielding at AAA right now looks rather pathetic.

If actually winning games at the minor league level has any value to our pitchers, than they are not doing than any favors by throwing them in front of that line up.

Reinforcements are on the way from Springfield. The Memphis team will be exciting to watch in 2013.

          • RCHIII says:

            That’s no kidding!

When I checked about a week ago, Memphis was drawing something like 6800 fans per game in 2012. In 2011, Memphis drew about 7100 fans per game. Not much of a drop considering the significant lack of young/exciting position players from the start of the 2012 season, Memphis ranked 4/5 in overall PCL attendance.

Shelby Miller did pitch very well, at least for six innings, but I fail to see what was “hard-luck” about his loss. In the seventh he did what he has done all too often this season, gave up a home run and lost. In many ways he has righted his formerly listing ship, but his affinity for gopher balls remains, a deficiency that shows no sign of being corrected. In the end he lost not because of bad luck but because he was outpitched (or, if you prefer, because the feeble offense Memphis is presently deploying couldn’t hit).

    • shaneo69 says:

He was outpitched by Seth McClung, who improved to 3-14 and lowered his ERA to 6.32 after the shutout.

    • UofIx3 says:

Shelby is having problems with HRs this year, but I’m curious to see if it’s a one-year blip. This HR rate doesn’t track his earlier career numbers, especially in comparison to the ground ball percentage.

      HR/Air% | GB %

      ’12: 10% | 34% (AAA Memphis)
      ’11: 2% | 45% (AA Springfield)
      ’11: 3% | 36% (A+ Palm Beach)
      ’10: 5% | 46% (A- Quad Cities)

Granted, Miller could be reaching his professional pitching level than his draft position, bonus and scouting has lead us to believe–where he can’t get out more advanced hitters, leading to a higher HR rate–but given a look at his previous HR levels and GB rates, hopefully we can expect a diminished home run % next year. His HR% has been relatively steady despite rather sizable differences in groundball rates, and exposure to vastly different hitting environments (i.e. Palm Beach v. Springfield).

  5. Bigjawnmize says:

Can anyone tell me why we draft Ramesy over Trahan. Just thinking outloud here…

  6. sadsushi says:

Outstanding starts from the Cards 2 best pitching prospects..Good to see Martinez get more k’s

  7. Cade Thompson says:

Bigjawnmize: Passing on Trahan and Gallo wasn’t very smart in my opinion. With all the 3B we drafted I’m surprised we didn’t draft Gallo. His power is amazing. I agree that we should have tried to draft Trahan too. The Ramsey pick will NEVER make sense to me.

    • Bigjawnmize says:

I think it was a result of over thinking the new system and trying to save money that ended up not being saved. In hindsight I doubt they make this pick considering the dollars that Ramsey signed for.

    • Shanky says:

I’m guessing Ramsey will show considerably more in the Texas League next year. Not drafting a higher-upside prep pick like Trahan or Gallo in that spot after taking a seasoned college guy like Wacha doesn’t make sense to me, however.

  8. UofIx3 says:

Scruggs with a .905 OPS after the all start break.

  9. DT FLush says:

Silfredo Garcia has now only walked 4 batters in 66.1 IP 72K has held opponents to a .198 AVG this season Johnson City and GCL combined. Garcia sits high 80s and low 90s on his fastball with a change-up that produces a few swings and misses. Garcia is one of the more polished pitchers at that level and has well developed breaking stuff as well.

  10. DT FLush says:

Quad Cities thoughts on Matt Williams this season.

“He has shown good growth offensively and has shown at times flashes on defense. Many of his errors have been on routine balls “
