Springfield, who has been receiving a nice contribution from Mike O’Neill, was the only farm team to post a win on the night. Stephen Piscotty performed well with the bat and didn’t make any fielding errors. Palm Beach and Batavia were both postponed. Let’s get to the (not so) good stuff….
Hitting
- Adron Chambers went 3-for-4 w/ 1 BB, 2 R and 1 RBI
- Cedric Hunter came in as a pinch hitter and hit a 3-run homer
- Unfortunately, he pinch hit for Lance Berkman who went 0-for-4
- Steven Hill (1 RBI) and Brock Peterson both singled
- Eugenio Velez went 2-for-4 w/ 2 R and 1 RBI
- Vance Albitz went 2-for-4 w/ 1 2B, 1 R and 1 RBI
Pitching:
- Unless Nick Greenwood has been moved to the starting role, this game was a bullpen game. Unfortunately for Memphis their bullpen has been terrible and Greenwood, John Gaub, Adam Reifer and Eduardo Sanchez all lived up to that standard.
- Jorge Rondon (surprisingly) was the only pitcher to pitch well, he went 2.0 scoreless innings that included only 2 BB
Arkansas 3 @ Springfield 4 (11 innings)
Hitting:
- Kolten Wong went 2-for-6 w/ 1 2B
- Jermaine Curtis went 2-for-5 w/ 1 RBI
- Chris Swauger hit a solo shot in 5 AB
- Mike O’Neill went 4-for-5 w/ 1 2B, 1 R and 1 RBI, he is hitting .556/.629/.741 for a 1.369 OPS in 27 AB’s at Springfield, not a bad start
- Adam Melker went 2-for-5 w/ 1 R
- Jamie Romak (1 BB) and Xavier Scruggs (1 R, 1 BB) both went 1-for-4 w/ 1 2B
- Greg Garcia (1 BB) and Audry Perez both singled in 5 PA
Pitching:
- Seth Maness recovered from recent struggles to pitch reasonably: 7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB and 3 K
- Eric Fornataro (1 H, 1 BB) and Keith Butler (1 BB, 3 K) both pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, Butler was given the win after the Cardinals walked off in the bottom of the 11th
Quad Cities 6 @ Clinton 7 (Game 1)
Hitting:
- Nick Martini went 1-for-4 w/ 1 2B and 2 RBI
- Stephen Piscotty went 2-for-3 w/ 1 HR, 2 R and 2 RBI, he was errorless
- Anthony Melchionda, Matt Williams and Juan Castillo all went 1-for-3 w/ 1 R
Pitching:
- Hector Hernandez got the start and continued to struggle in what has been a disappointing year: 4.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R (6 ER), 5 BB and 2 K
- Ricky Martinez finished the game out with 1.2 scoreless innings, they included 1 H
Quad Cities 1 @ Clinton 10 (Game 2)
Hitting:
- Nick Martini and Matt Williams both went 1-for-3
- Stephen Piscotty went 2-for-3 w/ 2 2B, he was errorless again
- Anthony Melchionda provided the only scoring with a solo homer
Pitching:
- Bradley Watson was awful for 4.0 innings as the starter, Yunier Castillo was only marginally better for the final 2.0
Hitting:
- The only XBH for JC was a 2-run homer by Carson Kelly
- Leandro Mateo, Cesar Valera and Ronard Castillo all singled
- Ricardo Lizcano went 1-for-3 w/ 1 BB
- Gerwuins Velazco went 1-for-3 w/ 1 BB and 1 R
- Dutch Deol went 2-for-4 w/ 1 R
Pitching:
- Juan Bautista got the start and kept his team in the game: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB and 5 K
- Sam Tuivailala pitched a scoreless inning that included 2 K and 1 H
- Jeffrey Rauh took the loss after giving up 2 R ( 1 ER) on 2 H and 4 BB over the final 2.0 innings

and Springfield clinched.
I love you Carson
Kelly showing surprising raw power potential in his first full season in pro ball 9 HR .662 OPS.
Any word on why Rosenthal didn’t make his (purportedly) scheduled start in Memphis?
No information on Rosenthal, but the last time they did this was before his 2nd stint in STL. We know he isn’t hurt as somewhere Rosenthal was quoted as saying he didn’t know why he was scratched. He isn’t eligible for the call-up before Aug. 29th. If they make this move, I guess it is with Dickson going back down.
The Club may be looking for insurance with Lynn and Kelly. Lynn may have hit a wall. He pitched 164 innings in 2010, but only a few over 100 in 2011. I believe his is currently over 140 now. Kelly has pitched great IMO, but his innings are approaching over 40 in excess of 2011. In the meantime, Rosenthal’s innings have been held down by doing a lot of sitting in STL, and when he went back down, his SP innings were also limited because of the sitting. Whether this “insurance” comes from Rosenthal or Dickson, I guess we will know soon enough.
Says on his FB page he got called up. Cool.
I am fairly recent in re joining the site, but have you guys surely discussed whether Springfield would beat Memphis in a series? Likely depends on the starting pitchers placement,. Since a number have pitched at both teams year.
Even if Rosenthal or Miller didn’t give up any earned runs, I think Springfield probably wins a 3 game series. The Memphis D has been awful when I have paid attention, and the remaining Memphis pitching is questionable – not to mention with Adams out they don’t have much pop either. JMO
Interesting question, C-ex.
If it came down to the bullpens, I’d have to take the AA guys — the Memphis relief corps has been a relief corpse this year.
I don’t know if Keith Law was right about Piscotty’s having 20-25 HR power long term, but at the least it looks like the young man could have some 40 doubles / 12-15 homers seasons. If he can do that while hitting .290+, you’ve got a solid starter at the hot corner. (Provided the glove will play, of course.)
Sam Tui walked no one yesterday. This is noteworthy, as the teen has issued 13 passes in 13 innings…while fanning 23(!). Funny thing about Tui: his GB/FB ratio stands at 0.07. Now THAT’S a flyball pitcher.
Interesting. Samuel Tuivailala has sit 94-97 consistently on his fastball also has mixed in a curve-ball as well this season. Lacks a third pitch and a lot of mound time it will take him a while to develop but he’s making strides in his first season on the rubber.
have not seen any commentary about Swagerty’s recover from TJ. anybody know anything on how it’s going?
Me neither…it is such a standardize process now that I assume no news is good news. I think you would only hear if there was a set back and no one ever comes back from that surgery ahead of schedule anymore.
I hope that’s not the only way to avoid errors with Piscotty… penciling him in at DH..
Eric Fornataro is having a solid season in his first season being developed as a reliever 54.2% GB rate almost half of his outs are coming from via the groundball 2.47 ERA 15.2% K rate 6.1% walk rate only 16 walks to 40 K in 65 IP showing solid control as well.
Fornataro has sat in the low-to-mid-to-high 90s on his fastball also mixes in a big loopy curve-ball with a big hook. It will be interesting to see the organizations approach with Fornataro’s development in the next coming years ahead he’s got good stuff for a reliever.
Fornataro is also eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this winter if he’s not placed on the 40 man anytime soon. Richard Castillo, and Xavier Scruggs also eligible for Rule 5 this winter.
I could see Fornataro getting picked up – I doubt Castillo or Scruggs would. I have to believe they will protect Eric.
