Springfield falls in game 4. The series goes the distance today. Win, or go home.

Springfield 1, Tulsa 4

  • Kotlen Wong was 0-f0r-3 with a walk.
  • Oscar Taveras was 0-for-4.
  • Jamie Romak was 3-for-4 with a double.
  • Xavier Scruggs was 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk.
  • Greg Garcia, who was 0-for-4, made an uncharacteristic pair of errors in the game leading to an unearned run.
  • Scott Gorgon pitched 5 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 runs  (2 earned). He struck out 3 but was hurt mostly by the pair of home runs he allowed.
  • Justin Wright allowed a run on 1 hit in his inning of work.  He struck out 1.
  • Deryk Hooker allowed a run and struck out 2 in an inning of work.
  • Kevin Thomas would pitch the 8th and 9th striking out 3.

The fifth game of the series will take place today at 2:08pm. Springfield has home field advantage so the game is at Hammons Field. Boone Whiting takes the mound for the Cardinals.

If Springfield loses, I wonder if OT will get called up?

  2. Cade Thompson says:

I hope so. The Cardinals need some excitement right now. Why wait?

    • zuke354 says:

Because the cards are more considered about developing OT and winning then they are about creating what some fans call “Excitement”.

.260/28/86 is far from garbage…been battling a knee injury for awhile too….Beltran has filled the Albert gap better this year than anyone expected!

No reason to rush on Taveras, he’s young and he’s already played alot of games for a 20yr old

    • Kdizzle says:

Beltran has slugged just a tad over .400 since the all star break. Yes when taking the entire season into account he has been far from “garbage”, and Mike wasn’t saying that.

He is saying that Beltran isn’t really a very good major league player right now, so the Cardinals need to find something or someone to make up for the lost production. A 20 year old that could have three weeks of really good production before major league pitching makes the adjustment against him could be that replacement.

And I’m really getting tired of the pearl clutching over the possible threat of having give up a forty man roster spot, or starting a players arbitration clock early. Who cares if the Cardinals have to possibly play a really really good young major league player closer to his market value a little earlier than normal? Any possible deal would still probably be for much less than what he could get on the open market if he were a free agent at the time.

And forty man roster spots aren’t worth their weight in platinum. Its as easy as dropping as John Gaub off of it, and adding Taveras to it.

      • zuke354 says:

A 20 year old “COULD” have 3 weeks of production.

That is a pretty big assumption. How did those 3 weeks work out for Mike trout last year?

And I am getting pretty tired of people assuming the major leagues are easy.

Other options for RF: Craig, Carpenter, Chambers.

    Just hit a bomb!

    Amen, dizzle!

Carlos Beltran hasn’t had an OPS north of .700 for a full month, since June. I don’t know if that stupid home run derby nonsense had anything to do with it, or if it’s 99% knee-related, but Beltran isn’t himself.

If Matt Adams hadn’t gotten injured, I could see leaving Minor League Guy in the minors — but with Matt The Bat unavailable, and Beltran not hitting a lick, Taveras only makes sense.

Especially when *one* victory could (likely will) be the difference between making or missing the post-season.

I am a huge fan of Jon Jay, and think he’s blossoming into an elite CF’er….when Furcal was moved out ofthe leadoff spot and Jay was moved in, it seems to me that he has been hitting at an even better clip than his normal excellence….and stealing some bases too!

Anyone have Jay’s stats since he’s moved to top of the order?

Congrats to the Springfield Cardinals on winning 3-1 over Tulsa advancing to the Texas League Championship game against the Frisco Rough Riders.

Boone Whiting baby!!!! Seven innings of one-hit ball. Only that Troy Tulowitski guy got to him, but then I hear he’s a pretty good player. (yes it’s tongue in cheek) Or at least I think it was Troy.

And how about Chris Swauger. He has swagger! He won two games with his bat. Into the championships and let’s hope the rest of the lineup can catch some Swauger swagger. Maybe some Kolten Karma this time or some Oscar Omens or some scrappy Scruggs. How about getting on track with some NASgARcia or some Jermaine….er….Curtis….umm…..nah…I got nothing!

Talent was intentionally amassed in Springfield to win a championship this season and they are oh so close to achieving that goal. Go Cardinals!!!

    • Jeffery says:

Swauger had a nice series. But in the 6th inning he made a diving catch to rob Tulowitski of extra bases and broke his collarbone. He is out of the Frisco series.

Drove down Saturday for my last in-person look at the Springfield Cardinals. I have watched games in April, May, June, July and now September. Vuch avoided moving key Springfield players to the sinking Memphis ship as they felt this AA group could win the Texas League title and it may happen that way!

Compared to previous games, I didn’t see much life on Springfield’s part either on the field or in the dugout on Saturday. Sunday’s game was different as it appeared the players had more bounce. Scoring two runs in the 2nd inning may have helped.

Boone Whiting was impressive. Compared to other Cardinal pitchers, Boone is a bit on the slim side at 6-1/175, but is a true pitcher. Nearly all pitches appeared to range in the 73-85 mpg range. Did see one ball clocked at 89. Boone varies his speed and location with ease.

Eric Fornataro was impressive in his one inning on Sunday. This strong-body thrower was in the mid-90′s and had at least one pitch at 98 on the stadium gun. Eric had two Ks and then bare-handed a hot, high hopping ground ball headed thru the box for a 1-3.

Sort of neat seeing Troy Tulowitzki at SS. In two games he popped-up to 3B, K, grounded into a force-out, 6-3, 1-3, K, -7deep, and ending with a ground single to center. He was running at about 3/4 speed. He sure is a big dude!

Small stuff: (1) nearly all Springfield players are growing playoff beards…..not a pretty sight, (2) during the National Anthem all of the Springfield players stood at attention (military style) gloves on the ground with hats on the gloves, legs straight and feet together, arms straight down and hands gripped…..being a veteran I thought it was a nice touch.

If Boone Whiting wins minor league pitcher of the year in 2013, can we call the system “boone’s farm”?
