Drove down Saturday for my last in-person look at the Springfield Cardinals. I have watched games in April, May, June, July and now September. Vuch avoided moving key Springfield players to the sinking Memphis ship as they felt this AA group could win the Texas League title and it may happen that way!

Compared to previous games, I didn't see much life on Springfield's part either on the field or in the dugout on Saturday. Sunday's game was different as it appeared the players had more bounce. Scoring two runs in the 2nd inning may have helped.

Boone Whiting was impressive. Compared to other Cardinal pitchers, Boone is a bit on the slim side at 6-1/175, but is a true pitcher. Nearly all pitches appeared to range in the 73-85 mpg range. Did see one ball clocked at 89. Boone varies his speed and location with ease.

Eric Fornataro was impressive in his one inning on Sunday. This strong-body thrower was in the mid-90's and had at least one pitch at 98 on the stadium gun. Eric had two Ks and then bare-handed a hot, high hopping ground ball headed thru the box for a 1-3.

Sort of neat seeing Troy Tulowitzki at SS. In two games he popped-up to 3B, K, grounded into a force-out, 6-3, 1-3, K, -7deep, and ending with a ground single to center. He was running at about 3/4 speed. He sure is a big dude!

Small stuff: (1) nearly all Springfield players are growing playoff beards.....not a pretty sight, (2) during the National Anthem all of the Springfield players stood at attention (military style) gloves on the ground with hats on the gloves, legs straight and feet together, arms straight down and hands gripped.....being a veteran I thought it was a nice touch.

Swauger had a nice series. But in the 6th inning he made a diving catch to rob Tulowitski of extra bases and broke his collarbone. He is out of the Frisco series.

Boone Whiting baby!!!! Seven innings of one-hit ball. Only that Troy Tulowitski guy got to him, but then I hear he's a pretty good player. (yes it's tongue in cheek) Or at least I think it was Troy.

And how about Chris Swauger. He has swagger! He won two games with his bat. Into the championships and let's hope the rest of the lineup can catch some Swauger swagger. Maybe some Kolten Karma this time or some Oscar Omens or some scrappy Scruggs. How about getting on track with some NASgARcia or some Jermaine....er....Curtis....umm.....nah...I got nothing!

Talent was intentionally amassed in Springfield to win a championship this season and they are oh so close to achieving that goal. Go Cardinals!!!
