It took a while, but finally we are kicking off the college wrap. Every Monday from now until the draft either myself or Picklefork will provide you with a run down on how some of the top college prospects in the country performed over the weekend. This class isn’t nearly as strong as last year, but there is some talent especially at the top. Everyone knows the Cardinals’ preference for college players, so it is likely some of the top picks for the birds this year will come from players profiled in this update. Check them out after the jump.

Now that its February it means we are getting close to baseball. Pitcher and Catchers will be reporting in a couple weeks, and college ball gets underway on Friday the 20th. With all that in mind, its a great time to kick off this year’s draft coverage. We are starting off today with the initial Future Redbirds top 30 draft prospect lists. Of course there will be plenty of movement in these rankings as we make our way toward June, but this list should give you a good idea of some guys to keep track of as the games get under way. Batavia is the only Cardinals’ affiliate still playing this year, and they went for a division title tonight. Fortunately they came out on top, but so did Jamestown who entered the day tied with the Muckdogs for first place in the Pinckney division of the New York-Penn League. I don’t know how the playoffs work, but I would have to think they are going to post-season play. Overall it was a great year for the Cardinals’ short-season clubs. Batavia wins their division, and Johnson City finished 2nd in their division. Check out the details from the game after the break. The obvious top story tonight was Adam Wainwright making another rehab start. Allen Vaughan of the News-Leader has his take. The talk a few weeks ago was a healthy Wainwright and Carpenter hopefully leading the Cardinals to the playoffs, and while they still might, I would be happy just to see both of them healthy to end the season. It was a great night on the farm as the teams combine to go 5-1. Check out all the details after the break.
Texas High School Lefty Matt Purke This year’s Aflac game showcased what appears to be a very strong year for high school power pitchers. I don’t know if any class can match the high school crop of 2007, but these guys are going to try to give them a run for their money. The cream of the crop is a pair of lefties Matt Purke and Tyler Matzek. Look for my lengthy complete report on the pitchers in this year’s game after the break.

Daily Farm Report 8/9/08Posted by fewgoodcards in Daily Farm Reports, tags: 2009 MLB DraftThe 2009 Draft is a long way away, but today scouting directors all over baseball were paying attention as the top high school prospects in the country took part in the AFLAC All-American game. It mostly took place during the Cardinals’ game, so I will have to go back and take a look at the tape before I give my full report, but it looks like a very talented class especially on the pitching side. The two lefties, Matt Purke and Tyler Matzek were very impressive from what I saw. If you want to find out more about the players, saber scouting and baseball america both have break downs of the top talent. Once again this year a local kid was one of the stars. You will hear a lot about St. Charles’ own Jacob Turner between now and June. He was the starter for the west squad and fanned 5 in 2 shutout innings. Hopefully for him he won’t have a senior let down like Tim Melville did this year. It sure was nice to see the Cardinals put a beat down on Zambrano wasn’t it? The system finished 3-3 on the night, check out all the highlights inside. The Matt Clement era has come to an end as the Cardinals released him today. I thought it was a decent signing at the time, but he wasn’t even close to being ready for opening day as management originally suggested. Hopefully he can catch on somewhere, but its not looking like he has much of a major league future. Chris Duncan also got some bad news as he is out for the year, and his future is in doubt. When you hear the words “experimental surgery” you know it can’t be good. This should give Joe Mather an extended look and a chance to earn a roster spot for next year. He has had a great week, but we will see how he responds after he has gone around the league. Stlcardinals.com has the lowdown on Jaime Garcia’s much anticipated debut. He wasn’t exactly pitching lights out in Memphis, and I have no clue how he will do, but this is one game I can’t wait to see. It is always exciting to see the top prospects make their debut, and Garcia is arguably the best pitcher the Cardinals’ system has to offer. Wouldn’t it be great if he was able to string together 3 or 4 good starts until Wainwright comes back? It was a busy night on the farm with high scoring affairs at nearly every level. The system was on both sides of some sizeable beat downs leading to an even 3-3 night. Check out the details after the jump. The River Bandits’ site has a nice article on the Cardinals’ two most recent first rounders. Pete Kozma has been struggling with the bat since his great month of April, but that is still a very talented left side of the infield in Quad Cities. Derrick Goold gives his thoughts on the best player, biggest leap forward, and biggest disappointment this year in the system in Baseball America’s mid-season report. Everyone played tonight except the GCL Cards, and Memphis had a double dip as the system went 4-3. Check out all the particulars after the break. Well we are getting ready to get started. Here are our final thoughts. |
