A leadoff double in the 2nd, followed by a sac bunt and RBI single got Lansing on the board vs Boone Whiting. Back to back singles followed by back to back walks pushed the 2nd and final run across against Whiting. He went 5 innings with 5 ks.

Drew Benes picked up the win with 2 IP. He gave up 2 H.

Aiden Lucas struckout all 3 batters he faced in the 8th for a hold.

Dean Kiekhefer got two quick outs in the 9th before a single and double pushed the game to the brink. He was able to get the final batter to fly out to record the save.

Nick Longmire picked up a single in the 7th. After Longmire, Colin Walsh doubled for his only hit, while Geoffrey Klein’s sac fly brought Longmire home. Klein also had a hit and walk.

Ronny Gil reached on a throwing error and Oscar Taveras (be still my beating heart) blasted a 2-run go ahead HR in the 8th to give Quad Cities their tally.

Quad Cities picked up the series sweep tonight against Clinton. Their season will now continue as they move on to round two of the playoffs. Let’s take a look at what went down in the clinching game.

On to the DFR!

Quad Cities 5, Clinton 3

In the first inning, Anthony Ferrara got two quick outs before giving up a solo HR and 2 singles. He killed that threat but gave up a lead off HR in the 6th, followed by a walk and a RBI double to give Clinton 3 runs and put them out in front. He finished the night with 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB and 5 K.

Jonathan Rodriguez was the offensive star again tonight. He walked in the 2nd, moved into scoring position on an error and scored on a Colin Walsh single. In the bottom of the 6th, he ignited the Quad Cities comeback by driving in Oscar Tavares (1-for-4) who had walked with a RBI 2B. Cody Stanley (1-for-3) doubled him home.

Colin Walsh, who finished 3-for-3 with 3 singles and 2 RBI drove in Stanley in the 6th for the winning run following Nick Longmire’s tying sacrifice fly. Walsh also walked and scored in the 9th.

Geoffrey Klein went 3-for-4.

With the Riverbandits in the lead following the 6th, the bullpen locked the game down.

Drew Benes pitched the 7th and 1 batter in the 9th, giving up 2 H.

Justin Edwards walked 1 batter in the 8th after getting a fly out and grounded into force play. He got the last batter to fly out to end the inning.

The 9th belonged to Dean Kiekhefer and he logged the save with 3 groundouts and a single.

Depending on how much longer this postseason run goes, this may be my last DFR of the year. If so, a pleasure as always and if I don’t see you before, see you in the spring!

On to the DFR!

Quad Cities 9, Clinton 5 (Game 1 of Series)

Quad Cities jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings and Clinton never could recover.

Boone Whiting gave up 2 doubles in the 3rd and a 2 run HR in the 6th for the only real trouble he faced over the 6 innings he pitched. He would strike out 9 batters, including the last batter he faced. The 2 doubles and the HR accounted for 3 of the 6 H he gave up and all 3 ER.

Ronny Gil and Oscar Taveras both singled in the 1st inning before Jonathan Rodriguez brought them home with a 3-run HR. Rodriguez would hit a sac fly in the 7th and a RBI 2B in the 9th to go 2-for-3 with 5 RBI, 2B and HR.

In the 2nd, Geoffrey Klein doubled (1-for-4) and after a Kolten Wong walk and Joey Bergman HBP, Oscar Taveras would hit his 2nd single. He cleared the bases and advanced to 3rd on the throw. Taveras went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI.

Kolten Wong and Nick Longmire went 1-for-4.

Michael Maness made a mess of things in the 7th. He got the 1st batter on a groundout, but then allowed a 2B, RBI 1B, BB and another single to load the bases. His line would finish with .1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER and 1 BB.

Aiden Lucas surrendered a run because of a Kolten Wong fielding error but got the next batter to ground into an inning ending DP. In the 8th, he struckout 2 for a line of 1.2 IP and 2 K.

Dean Kiekhefer gave up a H but struckout 2 in his IP.

The first time through the order, the success is greater because of the newness factor. Yet, with each look the opponent gets at you, the more likely they are to either square up the bad ones or lay off the good ones. Still, Dickson did exactly what I expected from him and I’m sorry he didn’t last long enough to notch a W.
