Cardinals’ fans surely miss Brendan Ryan’s defense at shortstop right now.  Brendan Ryan probably misses winning ballgames in the midst of a 16 game losing streak in Seattle.  The Cardinals return on that trade has been surprisingly good though as Maikel Cleto has played his way from Palm Beach through Springfield to Memphis.  After making his sixth start in Memphis last night, there’s probably some work to be done.

Per lots of outlets on Twitter and elsewhere, sorry I don’t have the person who had it first.

To me, this makes no sense.  There should be at least 5 guys ahead of Cleto on the path to the majors regardless of what kind of stuff he throws.  Cleto was not above A ball before this season.  Mitchell Boggs was JUST in the majors last week.  Broderick and Jess Todd have been in the majors this year as well.  Raul Valdes can probably give you a few replacement level innings in a pinch.

Sometimes, I have no idea what the Cardinals are doing and what their plan is.  This is one of those times.

If there was any doubt as to what the strength of the organization is right now, the last five days of games should have put that to rest.  Starting pitching throughout the system, though most prominently in the low minors, is very much the backbone of the Cardinals prospect lists.  Here’s a recap of the top pitching performances thus far.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold is doing great work for all of us “at home” types and getting video of the Cardinal prospects in the “B” games.  Today, he was able to catch video of Maikel Cleto versus Tommy Pham, Ryan Jackson, Zack Cox, Alex Castellanos and Oscar Taveras.  Check out his full article at the P-D about Cleto as well.  These looks at the never talked about “B” games are great to get an extended look at the feature pitcher, but also to see these 5 hitters as well.  After the jump, I have embedded the videos.
