Over Labor Day weekend, one month ago, I made another tip to the Quad Cities to watch River Bandits baseball. I’d been to the Quad Cities several times this year and still managed to miss Shelby Miller. Yes, I’m still bitter about that and yes, he’s something of a white whale to me currently. In any event, what follows are my notes on various players from that visit.

I’ll be making my third trip of the year to Quad Cities to watch some prospects this weekend. Once again, the starting pitching rotation has foiled me as Shelby Miller started last night and will not pitch again until next week after I’ve left.

As I recount my notes from the past week and scour the some 50 pictures I took over 3 days, I always find it prudent to let my notes sit for a bit before I make any hyperbolic statements. The trip to the Quad Cities was a lot of fun (and I owe a big thanks to my friend in that area for housing me for the weekend) despite the humidity.
After three days, these impressions are the epitome of small sample size on a results based measure. I try to look for skills that should be relevant after any sample size but I’m cognizant of the limitations here. Without further equivocating, here are my comments, both general and specific, regarding the Quad Cities River Bandits.

Post Game Thoughts
- Joe Kelly looked good. As long as he’s sitting 90-92 (which I suspect he is) with the fastball, he flashed the stuff to be a very good pitching prospect. His command of his breaking ball was erratic. He’s not conditioned to go deep into games yet as he started to show signs of tiring in the 4th. He’s going to be challenged when QC ditches the piggyback rotation later this year. I hope the Cardinals move Kelly slowly through the system.
- Robert Stock looks good behind the plate. I can see why the Cardinals like him as a catcher. Let’s hope the bat comes around.
- Niko Vasquez put a charge into the HR he hit. The athleticism is palpable with Vasquez but he seems to lack focus and is prone to mental errors in the field. He’s got the arm for 3rd but obviously he’s more valuable if he can stick at SS.
- Ryan Jackson covered SS well. It’s hard to tell exactly how good he was because we rarely saw his positioning as the camera switched to the field after the ball was caught in many instances. He didn’t make any obvious mistakes though and seemed to show good range towards 2nd base.

The River Bandits are middle of the pack in the Midwest League’s Western Division. They’re playing .447 baseball to date and are 5 games out of first place. Perhaps with the recent roster moves to add some talent from the short season clubs Quad Cities can make a push toward the top. With some new talent like Ryde Rodriguez and Eric Fornataro, QC is slowly making themselves more appealing for another scouting road trip as well. . .
