Inspired by the Kevin Goldstein podcast below from Pitchers Hit Eighth, I wanted to take a look at Zack Cox and his struggles so far in Springfield.  A quick look after the jump.

The Cardinals shuffled their minor league rosters today, moving 1st round pick, Zack Cox up to AA Springfield per PBCardinals Twitter. Cox has burst out in Palm Beach with a wRC+ of 123 (100 being average for both league and park).

In a corresponding move, Niko Vasquez was moved from Springfield down to Palm Beach per Kary Booher of the Springfield News-Leader. Vasquez has a wRC+ of 85 this season after two seasons in a row of over 100 in Quad Cities and Palm Beach.

Derrick Goold has some early top prospect assignments in his Bird Land blog today:

No. 1 prospect Shelby Miller, a righthanded pitcher, and No. 2 prospect, third baseman Zack Cox, have been assigned to the High-A Palm Beach club.

The Cardinals are not in a position to confirm the assignment, but it’s expected that Martinez will continue pitching in extended spring training rather than join the full-season rotation in Quad Cities.

All three assignments make sense.  Miller moves up a level.  Cox gets his first full season ball experience in Palm Beach.  Martinez continues his education before moving to Quad Cities this summer.  Smart move by the Cardinals, no reason to push Martinez when he is still new to the country.

As far as Quad Cities, I think their rotation will be fine for the time being:

Assigned to the Quad Cities No. 1 roster as RHP Seth Blair, RHP Jordan Swagerty and RHP Trevor Rosenthal.

Nothing is better this time of the year than a little shaky cam footage of prospects live on site in Jupiter. Nothing against Derrick Goold or the P-D staff, because I love seeing these videos, but both this fielding video and this batting practice video both give me a quick headache.  PS P-D team- here’s a iPhone steadycam that costs less than $200. Also, I did not chose the photo above to criticize Cox’s fielding ability.

All of those caveats out of the way, let’s think a little bit about Zach Cox’s fielding and his place in the infield.

Zach Cox is currently sporting a .533 OPS through 31 ABs in the Arizona Fall League. It’s nothing to get worked up about but the Cardinals certainly have eyes on him during his time in Arizona. There’s been speculation about the level that Cox will start at next year; I’ve done my own wishcasting in that regard.  His performance in Arizona will probably play a role but this isn’t the first time the Cardinals have drafted an advanced college bat in recent years.

After having seen Matt Carpenter in Springfield a couple weeks ago, I found myself questioning what the Cardinals have created for themselves in the selection of Zack Cox overall. I think they’ll have created a situation that is much to their advantage.
