The Cardinals placed 11 pitchers in our top 20 prospect list this year. One item that sticks out is that while the Cardinals have had the occasional late round break through (Trevor Rosenthal was drafted in the 21st round), the Cardinals have drafted well with their early round picks.

Short season baseball is full of new draftees, very young players and players coming up through Latin America. It’s an odd mix of older, often low upside players, and very young, very raw high upside players. The level of competition in a league is highly inconsistent from year to year (and from game to game for that matter).

We recap two of the Cardinals’ short season affiliates in Batavia and Johnson City but have not typically covered the Gulf Coast, Venezuelan or Domincan Leagues with any degree of regularity. If you want to take at the short season statistics from time to time, make sure and check in on these 5 players (in no particular order).

Sorry for the delayed reaction. I have Microsoft Security Essentials, and occasionally it decides it needs to update without my consent. I had a bazillion things running in the background, and it caused my computer to grind down to a halt.

Anyway, in my opinion this has been a great night for Jeff Luhnow and company. After getting the best pure hitter in the draft, the Cardinals were able to draft two very good arms with some upside in Blair and Jenkins.
